586 3 in. info.........

was brought an interesting version of an L frame I have never come across before, a blued 586 with a 3 inch barrel and has the proper box, with the product code that is noted in the S&W Standard catalog but NO info, just "special" for 1996............

Should this actually have been 1994 ??

It was a special run of 250, but I don't recall who it was. Some one will be along shortly that will give you more info. Very nice and hard to find Smith. I have one that I purchased around 6 years ago and was thrilled to find it.

The Special Order Code on the box appears to be 4214 viewed under magnification?Is this number correct?

The BRUxxxx serial also puts it in 1994.

This would put the revolver as manufactured on the 214th day of 1994 or August 2,1994

thanks for the reply , was wondering as on Pg 249 of the 3rd Ed. of the standard catalog, they have the product code of #103495 as being "special" for 1996, but the number is next to the 1994 run for the 38 special Brazilian guns made in 2 1/2 inch.......still NO 3 inch guns, nor in the latest Blue book.

very nice revolver.

that's the first 3 inch 586 I've seen with the red ramp insert. the other 3 inch I've seen have the black front sight, while the 2.5 inch I've seen have the red ramp insert.

the other 3 inch 586 I've seen have a different Hogue monogrip set of rubbers...the heal is more rounded and not as square. But this 586 begs to be wearing wood anyway, just as you are showing.

there are a few threads here on the Forum with info and pics for these elusive 3 inch and 2.5 inch beauties.

...... said he got it from a police supply here in NE Ohio and it came with red ramp and a white out line rear, maybe thats what was blacked out on the end label as the box, papers are the original for this gun, as at one time he had all the barrel lengths of the blued L frames 586 back in the day, kept this one as well as a matching 686 3 inch,,,,,,,,,,,I sold off most all of his blued S&Ws over the years for him,but I no longer set up at the OGCA,,,,,,and have been "missing" that market

Those wood grips are K/L frame S&W factory RB Smooth Presentation Target Stocks often referred to a Bananas.

In new condition with that beautiful grain they are worth $250+

Like new highly grained 'checkered' K/L frame RB Bananas are more common and in the $175+ range.

The Hogue K/L Monogrips with S&W logo are about $30 new from the S&W store and half that on ebay.

I've seen two other 103495 guns which had BSA serial number prefixes and September 1994 ship dates. A Jink's letter on one stated 200 where made for the distributor RSR. In other places the number is given as 250.

Perhaps the 1996 date is a mistake, since they all seem to be from 1994 and a '96 gun has yet to be seen. Both those BSA guns, and another BRU gun I saw (with s/n very close to the OP's), had pinned black ramp front sights and Hogue rubber grips.

Their boxes were all marked in the same fashion, with the word "SPECIAL" on the label. A rarely seen and highly desirable find.

Dang.... I had one of those......it never got used as IMO a 4" 686 was a better woods gun and a 3" 66 was easier to conceal carry!

yes,my favorite was the 3 in K framed guns mid 70's mdl 65, the "sky pd" carried them I recall, we had seen these only in shorter barrels or the stainless ones(685) when we did work for Abele-Davis ,and Star Law out in Conneaut. I think the 1996 date in the "standard catalog" (Vol 3 pg 249) book was a "misprint" should have been 1994 is my guess ( bet)
anyway much like Dave N, this guy bought and had most all the various models as well as each of the barrel lengths, only reason he hung onto this one he loves 3 in, matches his 686 3-in .
again, thank you guys for the info, I will certainly pass any and all of this on to my friend...sad this is one reason I miss going and setting up at the OGCA, oh well, I've saved a ton of money....( and HATE the long drive almost as bad as going to Tulsa......)

Thank you kernel C, good info as that has come to our attention also, and puts this gun possibly in the August 1994 date range.........just the red ramp , white outline seems to be the difference, and thats how he got it from the LE distributor...YES, they could have had the factory do the work, seen that before on "special" orders AFTER the original ship date. Standard Law had sent some back for "special features" after delivery.....

The going rate for these is $2500. I've always hoped to find one for $1500 or less. More than that and I'd opt for the current PC model.
