Thought I'd get some opinions on an idea I've been contemplating. For awhile now I've been on the hunt for a 586 snubby or 3". I know they are really rare and when one does pop up, it usually sells fast and for a lot. My idea is, if it's gonna be expensive for an original, provided one pops up for sale, then what about getting a 4" or 6", and having a competent gunsmith custom make a 3" or shorter. Maybe have him make a wannabe 586 effector if you will. I know it would cost an arm and leg but so would an original 586 snubby. Plus it would be a neat project gun. Maybe I should just settle for my 686's. Any opinions?

A quick check of gunbrokers just showed 15 auctions for a 586 with a 3 inch barrel.

ONLY my opinion. Try to find yourself a nice 3" 13. Yes, they are not plentiful. They come up. I have a 4" 586, no dash, and a 13-2, 4". I would not dream of altering either. The factory 3" guns should appreciate. An altered 586, not likely. Bob

A 3" 586 would be an "easy" conversion; you can probably even find someone to recreate the factory barrel stamps. Not sure if the shorter ejector rod of a 2.5" is an issue. You might want to try a similar length 686 beforehand to see if it would be worth the cost to you; the complete conversion may approach the cost of an original.
