Congrats on the 5906. If this is your first 3rd gen gun you have been bitten by the bug. They are fantastic, reliable shooters. I would not trade any of mine for anything and look to add to the collection as time goes on. Welcome to the forum.

I purchased a 6904 from a retired LEO and it's one of my favorites now. Came in like new condition and shoots like a charm. Best $225 I ever spent. Lookin for more 3rd generations now.

I WAS GOING TO CLEAN MY 5906 ALL THE THE WAY DOWN. WELL AS I WAS REMOVING PLUNGER AND SPRING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE MY FINGER SLIPPED AND THERE WENT THE PLUNGER AND SPRING

I have a 5906 with-as of last weekend-a little over 4,000 rounds of hollowpoint, range ammo, reloads and various other brands through it without a single malfunction of any kind.
Never thought I'd find a classic, steel auto that would "Out Glock a Glock," but I have found exactly that. I don't get attached to guns very often, but when I do, it's a S&W 5906.
Good choice. Replace the recoil and magazine springs if and when needed, other than that, you're set.

Nothing wrong with a polymer gun, but all things being equal I'll take steel instead.
Shoot the living heck out of your 5906. Then pass it on to the next deserving soul.

I think you'll like it. The 5906 has to be the World's Strongest 9mm handgun. My LGS Gunsmith (B. BURRIS handle on the Forum) took one in a few weeks ago for service.
It seems that the owner shot one of the Cabela's 'Made in China' 9mm reloads in it. The force of the obviously overloaded round blew out the magazine's floorplate, blew off the left side of the Xenoy grip (stung the shooter's hand) and made the slide operation somewhat difficult.
The shooter when he brought it in had the presence of mind to bring in the offending shell casing (or what was left of it). The case head was blown off in TWO pieces. Most 9mms operate in the 21K-33K PSI range with some +P+ around 36K.
One has to ask themselves what PSI level would this round have been? We guessed that it had to be in the 60-75K PSI range to blow a reinforced case head in half and separate it from the casing.
After some miking of the chamber/bore and some cleaning (the gun was filthy), along with a new set of S&W grips, the 5906 was back up and running.
Keep in mind that Mr. Burris just told me of a BHP (a new one) that had the barrel split and some minor damage done to the locking lug cutout in the slide with a hot reload.
Bottom Line: Many don't like the 38oz (empty) weight of the 5906, but the redundancy of the system is Russian T34 tank tough. I opine that it has to have a service life in the hundreds of thousands rather than the thousands or tens of thousands.
The $300-350 pricetage that many of these guns are fetching now makes it AWFULLY tempting...
