Well, being a long time DAO revolver shooter, I was hoping I would take a quick liking to my, new to me, 5943. This is my first metal S&W auto, other than my Model 41.

Just to level set. I standardized on DAO, no extra safeties, setup long ago as my go to carry platform. As such, I got rid of all my single stack single actions. The only autos I carry are a Glock 19 & a Glock 43. But most of the the time I have some sort of bobbed revolver on me.

So, I took a chance on the 5943 recently listed here.

First let me say, I LOVE THE TRIGGER. If you take your time you can feel a slight bit of stacking at the very end, but run it at a good pace and it really isn't that noticeable. I was already shooting it as good or better than my G19 with the Apex trigger that I have had for 5 years now. I kept moving the target out, and finished with two mags into an 8.5 X 11 piece of paper at 25 yards, shooting at a 1 shot a second pace.

As mentioned in my earlier post, I need to replace the grips. But I fear that even with the slimmest grips out there, it might feel too bukly in my medium hands.

Sights were nice, again better than my G19 out of the box.

It has me thinking that I might be happier with the single stack version 3953.

But overall, I think it's a keeper! I am, however, a little bit alarmed by the lack of aftermarket parts - in that regard one can get spoiled with everything out there for the current plastic guns like that Glock.

I would like to find a bigger mag release button.

The 5943 can be a load to carry, but it is a fine home defense or range gun.

My EDC is usually a model 3953 unless I feel my 4053 is a better carry option for the day. Both are fantastic shooters and easy to carry IWB.

My loaded 3953 in a Don Hume H715-M holster weighs only 32 ounces and disappears under a t-shirt. The 4053 is a couple ounces more in the same model holster.

My EDC is a Model 6946. The DAO trigger on mine is almost a perfect duplicate of that on my Model 640-1, which I use for deep concealment. Since yours is a full size pistol, you can swap in either the arched or flat back strap S&W factory plastic stocks. The flat back strap stock will be the smallest size you can put on one of these pistols.

Yeah, armorer951 suggested them on my other thread and I so I went out to Midway last night and they were both in stock and on sale for $12.89 a piece ---- so I purchased both to try out.

OK, I've been trying to keep the DAO line a secret for years, they are definitely the best of the 3rd gen models, IMHO.
Nothing to snag on, no safeties to manipulate, fabulous triggers, just like shooting a revolver double action - except better due to the slightly shorter trigger pull.
Oh well, I've not done such a good job, as this thead in the "notable thread" index doesn't help in keeping the secrecy...... :)

Only issue with the DAO pistols that were designed as DAO, not the later versions which were a modification of the TDA design, is holsters with a retention strap. The longer slide and frame of the DAO line means they will not fit in holsters designed for the TDA versions.

Thanks URIT, I just ordered a Don Hume H715-M for my 5943.
