Picked this up recently knowing that the barrel didn't match the model but price was right at $650. Haven't shot it yet.

Other than the red dot it looks all original. Could it have left the factory this way or did someone swap out the barrel? Will it make a difference? 22lr or magnum?

Thanks.

Does it chamber 22 magnum? a lot of 22s are convertible shooting either 22 long rifle in one cylinder and 22 magnum in the other through the same barrel, I'd say it was a factory mistake.
It could've been a 648-1 miss stamped as a 617-1 or the 617 with the 648 barrel installed

I have a model 629 classic hunter 44 magnum 6" barrel with a stamp on the barrel that says 357 magnum but it is a 44 magnum barrel. I write that off as beer 30 on Friday night quality control.

The bore on my 617-6 measures .224", so it should be better suited for .22 WMR than it is for .22 LR.
But it shoots .22 LR well enough.

I've considered getting a M648 cylinder for my 617 so I'd have a "convertible".

Just tried, cylinder does not accept .22 mag so we'll see how it compares to my 617-6 4". Also am curious about how I'll like the red dot…might have to change it back to iron sights.
