617 no dash, what is this "*" ?

This is on the back of my 617 no dash on the back of the cylinder opposite of the "V" stamp.
What is it?

It’s an asterisk.

Probably a fitter’s or inspector’s mark. For what reason is the question, can’t say I’ve ever seen one there before.
