Have a 617-3 6" (pre-lock) 6 shot that I need to sell to finance another project. It was bought used, shows very little use, 98% finish. It has an aluminum sight rail instead of the rear sight and comes mounted with a Bushnell Trophy red-dot that works fine. No box or papers.

I want to sell it on consignment through a local dealer that treats me well. Need help coming up with a reasonable price. Thanks in advance.

I've got a track on the Plus version of the 617, so drop the numbers by about $25-$30, here's the track:

Smith & Wesson 617-2 Plus Revolver in .22, Long Rifle. Bluebook of Gun Values (30th Edition) indicates between $431 in 98% condition and $566 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 39 recorded prices for this model gun from $350 to $595 over a period of 4 Yrs 2 Mos ending May 23, 2009. The average price as of that date was $450. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights, all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $861.

I don't know the value of the red dot or the commission to be taken on consignment but the gun itself should be right around $500-$530, in my opinion. It might take a while to sell locally.

Wow Bob, pretty impressed by that chart. How many models are you keeping data like that on?

Thanks, Ed. Guns I've owned, own, or lusted after. Started as "cost of replacement" support in case I ever needed it, turned into an annoying habit. ;)

That's a very cool chart. Great info.

I'm pretty sure I recognize one of the data points. Gunbroker will send me to the poorhouse.

Thanks 5WIre. You certainly gave me more info than I expected. I do expect it to take a while to sell locally. I have a few other guns up for consignment and they seem to be in the "summer doldrums" here. I think some of the inactivity may be sort of a correction from the panic buying post elelection and also due to the slow economy. Hopefully things will begin to move as people begin to think more about hunting season, etc. (even though my guns have little to do with hunting.) I'm probably going to pretty much give away the red dot to compensate for the lack of the factory rear sight and to provide a little incentive in these times.

Also, consignment commission is 10% or a little more around here. Local dealers that ask 15% or more are gouging, in my opinion, with no added value.

5wire, do you have a chart like that for the 6 shot 8 3/8" 617? Great info!
Sorry, no I don't. The Blue Book of Gun Values, 30th Ed has a premium on the 8-3/8 inch barrel $38 higher than the 6 inch barrel in my track, posted above. Seems reasonable to me.

A reminder, the data points in the chart represent an average of the prices reported in the month on the bottom axis. So, for example, May and September of 2008 data points each indicate the average price resulting from the three prices in each of those months, a weighted average.
