617 Ready For Steel Challenge

I decided to take my C-More off my 617 and shoot it for the next few weeks in RFPI (Rimfire Pistol Iron) category for Steel Challenge.

Today I fired 300 rounds of Federal BYOB and Remington Golden bullets and only had 2 Failure To Fires so I'm pretty happy. I have a new mainspring on order and that will take care of the FTFs.

I shoot better with my revolvers that I do with my Autos so I'm hoping to get into a higher class. This is a small, only 5 stage match, but if I do well I'll shoot the full SC Match next weekend.

It's advertised to be 100% with a 6.5 pound trigger pull. Mine is set at 8 pounds. I'm stubborn. I did have it at 6.5 and it works 100% with Federal HV ammo but only 98% with Blazers.

I'm now shooting whatever ammo I can get so I raised the poundage. I haven't measured the hammer drop yet but will soon.

BTW I had some problems in the beginning of the match but managed to shoot my best strings on Pendulum and Smoke And Hope.

Just got my 617 ready to go for SC. I prefer the look and feel of the 4" barrel.

The gun came with an atrocious trigger pull, one only an S&W lawyer could love. I put in a Wolff standard level Power Rib mainspring, but the factory strain screw was too short due to the channel in the Wolff spring, but Wolff sent me an extended strain screw. The addition of a Wolff 13-pound trigger return spring and polishing some internal surfaces took care of the problem.

The sight is from ADE Optics with a 6 MOA dot. The mount is a Weigand short mount.

I'm trying to increase my spit times so today all I did was shoot fast. I set the target at 15 yards and concentrated on pulling straight through the trigger without stopping to verify the sight.

My splits were about .25 seconds on average and I never missed the 8 inch Shoot & See target I was practicing on so next week I will try to increase my confidence at that speed.

I adjusted the trigger so that the lightest pull is 9 pounds. It now shoots Blazer and CCI Mini Mags with 100 % reliability. With the heavier pull I'm doing at least 1/2 hour of dry fire in the garage using #6 yellow wall anchors.

My finger is getting to the point where I can dry fire 500 times without finger fatigue. That will help with my spit times in the future.

The drywall anchors last only a dozen times or so for me, and the plastic snap caps about two dozen. Now I'm trying the SS ones made by Steelworx in the USA, and they will probably last over a thousand strikes. The reviews say that the SS is a softer alloy and won't hurt the hammer/firing pin, and so far that does seem to be the case (I'll try to post a picture later today). So far, I am having very good results in my M617 that I'm breaking in.

I am nervous about dry firing my 617...

At least a dozen hits per. I've been know to leave one set in and dry fire up to 500 times. I then replace them. I like the anchors because they are cheap.

I currently shoot 2 matches a month at Ben Avey Shooting Facility North of Phoenix. Both are Steel Challenge Matches

I'm using a stock mainspring and an 11 pound rebound spring but I'm going to swap it out with a 13 pounder. I haven't been practicing enough and I'm out running the current trigger.
