Very carefully. 1st you need proper size screw drivers to remove side plate. Then DO NOT PRY side plate off. Tap the frame where the grip was with screw driver handle and the plate will come up. now the trigger return spring is right behind the trigger. carefully take a flat edge screw driver and push the spring back and up. Make sure you are wearing safety glasses. The new spring will be quite teedious to replace so be patient and get the band aids out. I don't recommend you go below a 13 lb. spring. Good luck

OH yes, when putting it back together put the hammer block in and push it up, then when putting the side plate back on, use only thumb pressure to snap it down. if the hammer block is not placed correctly it won't snap down. again be patient.

Recommendation for anyone wanting to remove the side-plate of a S&W for any reason. Get the Kunhausen shop manual for S&W's. READ IT. Then attack your S&W. More S&W's have been ruined by screwdrivers than any other method.

Watch out for the MIM parts guns, I learned the hard way that the hand spring is no longer captured (mother razzer frazzer--- stupid son of a biscuit eaters) I think it took me a few days and a lot of help from forum members to finally get a 57 mountain gun back together.
