A couple of days ago I bought an as new S&W model 624, 4 incher. No box or papers came with the pistol. Naturally I wanted to know if my new prize was part of the old recall since its serial number is AHB74XX so I emailed them. Below is their official answer:

Subject: S&W model 624 recall

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting us.

That recall pre dates our computer system. I can tell you if you have stamping of a letter on the cylinder it has been back and inspected. If you would like us to inspect it follow the instructions below:

Shipping/Returns - Smith & Wesson

Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

S&W Joe NIEDZIELA

So there it is! My new pistol is officially defect free. Now what I want to know is, do any of our forum members have a mod 624 that has been checked and doesn't have a letter on the cylinder? Any and all comments are welcome. BTW I am NOT going to send my pistol back to S&W.

Below are photos of the pistola. It had goodyears that I replaced with Herrett Roper style stocks. Should have cleaned the cylinder star before photos; sorry about that. :D

I have two . It is understanding they put a red circle on the box only. Mine were checked via email and blessed as having good cylinders.

Nice looking Smith there. Glad it is defect free. Don't worry about the cylinder. Looks like the ones I shoot!

+1 on the red circle.

I've checked on a couple of guns in the suspect range and have received bogus info from some of their customer service people.

Check this link to see of your gun is in the suspect serial number range. The Gun FAQs

If it is, phone S&W (1-800-331-0852) and ask for Kate Fredette.

Thanks! I will give Kate a call. The reason I posted this was to comment, in a tongue in cheek way, on S&W's email response. Seems like if the 624 cylinder issue is such a serious affair they wouldn't have given me a brush-off about the info not being in the computer and relying on the old 'letter on the cylinder' spiel. S&W should have the serial numbers regarding this issue on hand to answer emails instead of having this Joe character giving inaccurate information. Seems that if Kate has the answers then Joe should have it also.

I've a couple of 624s (one with no "circled C" on the box and the other without a box) and have viewed these occasional threads with some bemusement. It seems to me the most idiotic method of indicating that an "important safety check" has been done would be to mark a bit of ephemera that is generally discarded by 80-90% of the customer base. That and the imprecise nature of giving the affected serial number ranges with only two of the three letter prefixes.

If you send your revolver in now how is it confirmed for future reference that the check has been done? A "happy letter" which may or may not get transferred to the next owner? Really???

It will be entered into their new WIN95 database system, & then when they upgrade to WIN ME next year it'll all be lost, & you'll have to send in again to be rechecked.

So after years of stating that the letters have nothing to do with the recall now one guy says it does. Call Kate, she has the real answers.

What Mack said. I just checked 2 624s in the past month with Kate personally and she cleared both, plus gave me shipping dates and other info. You might get bogus answers from anyone else. Talk to Kate!

As a 624 owner - and shooter - I say +1million to everything Jaymoore said. Who in their supposedly right mind devised the system of marking the box of the checked revolver rather than the cylinder? Were he here, it would have given Sam Clemens something to write about - and that would have been a riot. :D
