Both of these guns are Model of 1989, and very similar.

Why does it seem the -3 brings 2x the price? I didn't' think barrel length alone would be enough, but maybe I'm just not understanding.

I've found this to be true across several models. Snubbys always seem to be more popular and in turn, carry a higher cost. I'm currently looking for a Model 15 2 inch - and they are leaps and bounds over the 4 inch.

I totally get a 2.5 or 3" gun being more than a 4" or 5", but a 4" to 5" isn't enough of a difference to me to understand. Pretty much well in my eyes, a 4" to about 6.5" should be about the same in price.

And, we even see big differences in 2.5" to 3" guns, but that's more about scarcity. I didn't think there would be a scarcity issue in 4" to 5".

I should have read the title of your post - thats on me, I saw the -3 and in my lack of sleep thought it was a 3 inch.

Scarcity is likely the key. The 3" and 4" 625's were produced in much smaller numbers from the 5", by far the most popular barrel length as I recall. Therefore, the barrel length is probably responsible for the price difference, more than the engineering changes.

Wasn't the 625-3 Colt 45, whereas the 625-4 Colt 45 acp? The so called "Long Colt" seems to be more desirable.

The 4th Edition has a nice informational rundown on the 625 series. The initial run was in 5" (-2). Later production introduced the 4" & 3".
I've had 1 pair of -3 4" for some time , both "Model of 1989" marked. The 3 & 4 inch revolvers were produced in much lesser quantities

Winter & Spring found a -2 5" "Model of 1988" that replaced one of the 4". Another day located a 625-5 5" in .45 Colt. Reminds me I need to take some updated photos,,,,
The 625-5 also fills a spot in my set of 5" N-frames.

The 625-4 frame is more desirable than the -3 frame, because of rear sight.

The 4" barrel is highly desirable, but it is only common on the -3.

Everything is a compromise. There are no free lunches.

The ideal combination for me is a 625-4 frame with a Performance Center 4" barrel with interchangeable front sight.

The odd/even Colt/ACP paradigm does not always hold true. Here is a 625-3 (3") chambered in .45 ACP and a 625-7 (6.5") chambered in Colt. Also, one of the first 625's, a 625-2 (Model of 1988) 5" in .45 ACP.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I have a 625-3 with a 4" barrel in 45 ACP. Model of 1989. I really love the gun, but I wish it were a 5" barrel to complement my 5" 629 and 5" 686.
