What have people done to use the Brownell chamfering tool with 625's where the pilots did not drop far enough? Ream the throat?, check finish ream the chambers?
See attached picture

I found thru some research that the 625-8 appears to have been having this common problem with the chambfering tool and the pilot to be used when trying to chamfer the cylinder.

According to Brownell, for the 625 revolver, to use SKU 080-948-448WB 45° Cutter & Brass Pilot fits .45 ACP-1 Cylinder*

I had sent back one of my 625's (-8) for repair for other reasons. SW did replace a number of parts including a new cylinder. With a new cylinder, I wanted to chamfer the chambers for competition. The chamfering went very well using Brownell's tool. The cut chamfers did improvve speed loading the moonclips.

My friend would like to chamfer his cylinder as well, but we found the chambers would not let the Brownell chamfer pilots to drop in far enough.

I checked again my -3 ver and the -8 with the new cylinder from SW. No Problem in either. I checked the original cylider from the -8 and the pilots did not drop in far enough. I happened to have a new 625 cylinder I got from MGW and the pilots dropped more, but not enough like the -3 and the replaired -8.

As you can see within the attached picture, an unmod -3, the -8 with replacement cyl (unmod), -8 orig cyl, then the MGW. You can see how far in the pilots drop down on the -3 and the replacement, but not in the orig -8 or the other.

I am at a lose as to what might be becausing the pilots to not drop in the orig cyl

What are the dimensions/diameter of your pilots?

I bought my cutter & pilot(s) separately (not as a set) & used it on my 625-8.

The muzzle end of my pilot measured .4475" dia. This end should fit in the chamber's throats. Does it?

The breach end of my pilot measured .4775" dia. This end should ride on the chamber's shoulder. Does it?

Thx for your questions:

Steel Pilot - Throat end - .4473, Breach/Chamber end - .4773
Brass Pilot - Same as Steel

The pilots do go into the throat area. You can see how far in by looking at the "625-8 Orig"

The interesting thing was S&W had replaced the orig cyl, to which they sent back, with another cyl due to other repair work. But this replacement cyl had not problem with the pilots as seen in the pic. Even the 625 dash 3 did not have a problem.

The .4510 pilot for the throat reamer fits just fine from the throat end and does go in far enough to the other end of the throat, start of chamber area.
