627 PC finish?

My 627 PC revolver is one of those two tone jobs.
I like to know what metal is under that black finish - SS or carbon steel. I know the hammer and trigger are plated MIMS parts and I believe the cylinder is SS with a fine bead blast finish... but not sure.

Anyone have experience refinishing one of these?

Thanks in advance!

It was my understanding that the guns with a "6" prefix in the model number all were stainless. It is certainly easy to blacken stainless, all the SIG pistols in their 226 line and similar are available in black stainless.

"I know the hammer and trigger are plated MIMS parts"

I thought the PC was using the flash chromed forged triggers and hammers....... that was one of the advantages of the higher cost of a PC gun. maybe they ran out and started using MIM?

Bountyhunter,

Thanks for your reply!

I'm fairly new to the world of S&W revolvers, so my knowledge base is not very deep. It has always been my understanding the "600" series indicated a stainless model from S&W. I was wondering if there had been an exception to the standard - forgive me my senior moment...
Since my initial post, I have learned S&W used a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) process to apply a more wear resistant surface to the stainless, hence, the black finish. More research is required on my part to determine how difficult it is to repair when scratched or damaged.

As for the trigger and hammer, I may be in error with the MIMS comment. I am suspect of these parts however, because the plating on the hammer is starting to flake off . I wonder why the PC bothered. It would seem flash chroming would impart no advantage to forged parts, other than color change.

At any rate, I'm still learning and I appreciate your reply.

Thanks again.
