im heavily considering getting a 4 inch 627 pro instead of an m&p 40 pro as my first handgun purchase but i have a couple questions, some may be dumb. Im assuming the 627 pro does not require moonclips for loading and that you can just individually load rounds, correct me if im wrong. Does the n frame really make that much of a difference for carry over the smaller l frame 686. Im 6 foot 1 210 lbs so im not exactly small. does anyone have both to post a side by side comparison photo of the 686 and 627? thanks for your help, ive had a love for revolvers all my life and am on the fence now between the 40 and a revolver

Here is my only 686/686P, an " '04 Stocking Dealer Exclusive" and my 627Pro.

The 5" half-lug came with the HiViz sight and Ahrends grips. I added the HiViz, a tool-less and fast chore, and Ahrends retro targets to my 627 Pro when I bought it 5/08. The 686P has been to the range twice in the 3+ yr since I bought the 627 Pro. Oddly, as their weight is very similar, they balance very similarly in the hand. Accuracy goes to the square notched rear sight of the 627 Pro vs the 686P's V-notch, another stock attribute of that special 'exclusive' model. The moonclip capability - and eighth round capacity - really seal the deal for me.

The 627 Pro can be loaded without moon clips, as you assume. The difference in weight is probably not going to be felt: 2.3 oz more for the 627 Pro. There is some extra bulk in the N frame. I don't feel any difference between my 686 and 627, when carried for 10 or more hours on a work belt. Between the two, I carry the 627 much more often. In IWB carry the 627 is a little more obvious to me than the 686, feeling slightly thicker, only slightly. I'm 6'0" and 215. Hope this helps some......

I have a 3 inch CS-1 and a 627 Pro. Loaded the 627 is 8 oz heavier. I carry both in a Simply Rugger holster. I do notice the difference in weight and the 1 inch longer barrel.
