Several years ago I received a 6in 629-1 as a gift from my father. It has sat in my safe now for years. Looking for a little info on it.
What do the numbers mean.
Serial #AJK6656

There are numbers on the yoke E18 then below 12191. Can any one tell me the age of my revolver?

Thanks

Angelo

E18 is a fitters or inspectors mark.

12191 is the "assembly number". You will find this inside the sideplate and on the left side of the frame at the butt when the stocks are removed. The frame, sideplate and Yoke are hand fit to each other. The assembly number allows these major components to be easily re-matched if inadvertently separated during assembly.

The gun dates to approx. 1986. The alpha-sets were not issued in order except for the first letter. The good thing about the alpha-numeric SNs is you can call S&W Customer Service and they can usually tell you the exact date the gun was "put-up", S&W parlance for assembled. 800-331-0852

The AJK serial number prefix was in common use during....
October - December of 1985.
Smith began using the triple-alpha-four-numeric serial number system in 1980, and still use it today. For the most part the prefixes are issued in alphabetical order, including the second and third letter.
