Well my old S&W 625-3 .45 acp need an upgrade. I want to put a .500 target hammer on it for easy cocking.

Do you guys think a 629-1 .44 Square butt hammer would work on 625-3 .45 ACP round butt N frame?

I've been loading 275 grain LBTs, using auto rim cases, with good results and I just want to be able to easily cock the hammer for precision shots.

My 625-3 is just a handy little cannon.

ordered today!!! Yea.. and I'll give it an action job at the same time. I also handloaded some 275gr LBTs on auto-rim cases... will test it all out at one time!

Cool 3" 45ACP !

I like to put heavy bullets in my slightly longer 45WSM case.

Trouble is... I have shot .45 Supers from my 3 inch 625-3 and they KICK. I don't wanna make my gun a .460 Roland (Clark Custom Guns will rechamber my S&W to that cartridge if I want but ... I don't want.) Just jacking up the 625 to ++P is plenty for little old me!

Hammer came.. dropped right in!

I did a light action job, polished the rebound side and hammer/trigger parts that roll together when you do DA work. Greased the inside and most of the parts, especially the cylinder where it rotates and pivots, with a very nice grease made for interior of boat motors. Reassembled and lock-tited the screws.

Did not cut any springs but I did install a Ron Powers ribbed main spring.

Nice action! Also found a original pair of S&W combat grips and put them on.....

Pics tomorrow! Shoot this weekend!

Did you guys know what insane price these 3 inch 625-3s bring??? Fortunately, for me, someone buffed out the 'model of 1989' and cal that were laser engraved on the barrel.

So it isn't so much a collectors item but it is a dandy shooter! Mine is still very tight and no scratches.. I might even send it to such as Gemini to have 'em stamp '45 Auto Rim' on the barrel (I wonder if S&W would do that?) Maybe hard chrome finish to.

Got this gun at a gun show maybe 25 years ago.. back when they were not a big thing. Sat in the safe a whole bunch of years. I tried .45 Supers in it after Jimmy Clark said it would be 100% safe (he, of course, rechambers them to .460 Roland!) But the Supers kick quite a bit!

Hence the Auto-rim reloads. 275 grainer at maybe 850 if all I need in Texas!

Thar she blow!!! Improved!

Maybe S&W can stamp .45 Auto Rim on one side of the barrel and Smith & Wesson on the other... and a touch of engraving!

I don't believe "45 Auto Rim" is a standard S&W roll mark, so it will have to be hand stamped or engraved. I don't think Smith's repair and refinish people are up to that.

I have the 5" Series of 1989 and around 200 full moon clips to keep me occupied. I picked up a HKS speed loader in Auto Rim last winter from a junk box for $5.

My plan is to use Auto-Rims for first 6 shots and then full moon clips if I have to do a speed reload.

I just saw a 3 inch .45 Colt 625-3 for $1600... dang.

"Dang" just isn't strong enough of word!

I have a 629-10 PC 2 5/8 44 Mag. (unfluted cylinder) With a good belt and the DeSantis 3" holster it rides fine for about 12 hours, between 12 and 16 hours, it not only feels like it's pulling your pants down; It starts felling like it's pulling your brain down too!

The 45WSM is loaded to 25-28K PSI, the same as the 45 Super.

The 460 Roland is a 40K CUP cartridge.

I'd never shoot such a high pressure cartridge in a 45ACP revolver cylinder with minimum chamber thicknesses thinner than found in a similar S&W 44 Magnum cylinder.

(At it's thinnest point, the cylinder lock notch, a S&W 45 revolver averages .030" thick (outside chamber wall thickness minus the lock notch's depth). A S&W 44 Magnum averages .040" thickness. That's ~25% less in thickness for the 45.)

Heavy bullets (275 grain LBT) kick more than lightweight bullets. I shoot mostly 185gr JHP in my 45 Supers.
