Hi,
I have a 629-4 3" Magnaported Trail Boss 44 mag.

At the last gun show I bought a box of Winchester 44 Special 240 SWC in a plain white box from Miwall.
Yesterday I went to the range and found that it wouldn't group at all.... Plus the stuff was DIRTY.... Must have been the lube... it left a black residue that was almost impossible the remove.
Now this gun was dead accurate with the last 44 Mags I shot...

Could it be crappy ammo? Or do 629's not like shorter 44 special ammo?

Your 629-4 does not like that specific .44 Special load. That does not mean you will never find a .44 Special load that is accurate and clean burning in your revolver. Reloading provides more opportunities for successfully matching a load to a gun.

As much as I love reloading, when the local indoor range was requiring jacket bullets to reduce air borne lead I bought Wolf 9 MM from Milwal for $84 a 1,000 out the door. I shot a ton of it in matches. It was more accurate than reloaded Winchester and Remington FMJ bullets and Berry's plated bullets. I'm glad to hear they are still in business.

If the gun was accurate and clean firing with other ammo you have tried, then it was probably the ammo. I am not aware of .44spl factory loaded by Winchester in the "white box" version? May have been reloads? Any way you look at it, a lubed lead bullet load is going to show a lot more fouling on a stainless steel gun then a jacketed bullet load.

I've had LSWCs miss the target by 2 feet at 25 yards because it was loaded too hot. I reduced my powder charge and fine tuned it and have found MY sweet load for 44 mag. Your gun just didn't like what you were feeding it. Like giving a kid broccoli. My dog eats broccoli but that's different.

I Had a Dan Wesson 44 mag with two four inch barrels. One was ported and the other was not. The gent I got the gun from told me to never shoot cast bullets in the ported barrel as they would eventually lead the ports and they would not shoot well out of the gun.
He may have not known what he was talking about, but it made sense to me.

The Miwall products I remember were all reloads. That was back in the 80's. If your 629 shot well with other loads then it was probably the ammo.
