I just acquired this gun. It was represented as a "Lew Horton" special order, and was associated with a limited run in the 80's. However, the serial number is an October 2000 according to the SWSC (CEF) and the product code is listed in the SWSC as a 3" Classic Carry 1999.

Under "Features" on the label, it says "**SPECIAL**". Can someone help me identify this? How can I determine whether there is any relationship to Lew Horton, or if this is a limited run? I could pay for a letter, but I'd rather not go there yet.

It is a 629, RB, 3", .44 magnum

"Hello Brainaxe!

Your Smith & Wesson Model 629 is indeed a Lew Horton Special Edition. It was one of 1500 units produced for us by Smith & Wesson between 1997 and 2000. It is S&W part #103658. It came through as you described it: 3 inch barrel and non-fluted cylinder. The grips we rosewood.

Hope this information helps!

Same reply

I wrote to Lew Horton and received the same, I assume, canned reply. I expect "John" was the last guy who asked this same question and there is the same mistake in the last line, "we" for "were". It's not me. How many of these must they field each day? It was nice to receive such a quick reply though.
