Greetings- I hate to be one of "those guys", but I can't seem to turn up a thread anywhere that will help narrow the date down.

I have an excellent condition 629-6 PC "V-Comp", with SN: DDA8xxx, and I'm stumped with a ballpark year of when it was manufactured. The -6 tells me 2001-2005, but the DDA serial number says after 2016 after reading a thread someone with a 629-8 having a CUP-CZX serial number. I'm going to put it up for sale and I like having a date, or near date, of manufacture.

Can anyone give any guidance on this one? Thanks a many.

I don’t have a book so probably shouldn’t comment but the dash 6 run went from 2001 and are still currently produced
It the longest running dash in the 629’s
Sorry I couldn’t narrow your prefix down but someone much more informed than I will probably chime in

Hmmm...interesting dilemma. According to the "SCSW 5th Ed.", the 629-6 change was introduced with the internal lock in 2001. However, I couldn't find any reference to the 629-6 in a V-Comp configuration, only the Carry Comp III (3" bbl., Lew Horton, 2006). The only V-Comps listed are the 629-5 (4" bbl., PC 170137; 1999 and 2011-2012) and the 5" V-Comp for RSR (PC 170148; 2000). Your triple-alpha s/n prefix (DDA-xxxx) could have been mixed in with some C-prefixes as early as 2008, but that still doesn't jive with your suspected manufacture date. The SCSW is not infallible and relies on reported information, so your 629-6 V-Comp may just be the first one reported. Hopefully some Forum members with more information will be along soon to help you out. Good luck!

Many, if not all, Smith & Wesson firearms from this era have the Julian date on the label of the box or carry case it came in. It would be a four diget number all by itself somewhere on the label. Ex. "5123" would be the one hundred twenty third day of 2005.
