Just acquired a 629 no dash. I was wondering if someone could help put a date on it. Serial # is N777xxx.
Thanks

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, probably 1980. They only made these for a couple of years with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. The 6" started in 1979 and 4" and 8 3/8" were added in 1981. In 1982 Pinned and recessed were dropped.

I picked up a 629 no dash. Mine has recessed cylinder BUT no pinned barrel. Must be a transition gun.

OK! Let me try this again.
When I looked at what I had recorded as my 629 Serial Number,
I thought I had entered incorrectly.
But it is N777740.

I have the same (no dash) in 8 3/8" and love it......... Recessed but not pinned. Serial is N87559x. I also figure transition gun where they were mopping up parts. Further, it has to be a late 1981 or early 1982 production.

Mine was purchased 99% w/ wood presentation box. Unfortunately, I do not have the original cardboard box.
It's a great shooter.

Y'all take care....................... Bo

No Dash 629 (Still NIB) 1980 MFG With Grooved Trigger

I bought this at a gun show in 1980. I didn't think much about it, until I realized it came with a grooved trigger which apparently only a few early 629's came with. The case liner fell apart and was repaired/recovered by the Forum's Joe Cebull.

Mine is N777414

With Bill's nearby SN example shipping in September 1980, and the popularity of the gun at that time, there is a good chance yours left the factory that month, or +/- 2 months. S & W never ships in numeric order. Enjoy!

I read about a stainless 29 in the works in one of the gun magazines and put an order in at Hermans Sporting Goods. It wasn't until 1982 that I received it or about two years later.

I think one of the managers got the gun and then decided some time later he didn't want it so I really got a used gun.

It came with the wooden presentation box and is serial number N870287. At the time, you had to get permission from the police department to purchase a handgun in Fairfax County. So they came back with permission denied. So I had Hermans ship the gun to a shop in Loudoun County and picked the gun up there.

Hermans received a lot of Smith & Wessons and it was nice to selectively pick the ones that checked out with good fit and finish. The only kicker was that you had to pay list price.

All the more reason purchase rules need to be uniform if some need to exist. This just creates little kingdoms with little kings. Fire departments are the same way. Local authority having jurisdiction. More kingdoms

Photo of N777036. For comparison is a prototype Model 629, N629193 (assembled in December 1978). About the only difference between the two revolvers is the prototype has a target trigger that is 0.500 inch wide. The last photo is of a prototype Model 629, N629187, given to S&W's Engraving Department. It was given a bright polish and custom engraved and inlaid with gold by S&W Master Engraver Wayne D'Angelo in 2001. It was fitted with a case hardened hammer and trigger and special Nill stocks. This revolver was auctioned to members of the S&WCA in 2001 when we had our annual meeting in Springfield, MA. Click on the photos for a better look.
