Hello all. I'm new to this site and this is my first post. I have a 638 with the shrouded hammer and want to carry on my side. I am looking for a quality leather holster. Many of the holsters I have come across that are made for J-frame revolvers do not fit my 638 due to the shroud. Was wondering if anyone on here carrys one and if so what holster are you using. Thanks in advance.

Have several holster for my 638. The shroud is only a problem if there is a retaining strap on the holster. I carry it in a K&D Thunder Bird (IWB or OWB), an Andrews McDaniel II (IWB), an Andrews Monarch shoulder holster, a PCS Black Bird pocket holster, a belly band and I used to have a Kydex tuckable from FIST that finally cracked.

As noted, holsters having a retention strap over the hammer (or thumb-break) area will not work well with the shrouded hammer models.

I make holsters for the shrouded hammer models in strong-side and cross-draw applications, open top or with a retention over the rear of the trigger guard. This works like a thumb-break but instead of releasing the snap with the thumb it is released by the fingers of the drawing hand.

Some that I use with my 38-2...

Galco Stinger: single loop, open top, very nice

Kramer Scabbard: classic pancake, very comfortable, easily conceals under a large t-shirt

Here's my opinion on a couple of holsters ...

Blackhawk Speed Classic
pro: good leather and stitching for the $
con: I experienced a slight interference with the leather and my middle finger when drawing.

Kramer IWB Sheepskin Clip
pro: comfortable
con: clip will not go around the thickness of a pair of jeans and a Kramer double thick horsehide belt

Don Hume 721 (with Thumb Break)
pro: level 2 retention
con: gun and holster canted slightly outward away from my body

I just got rid of my 638. If interested, I am currently trying to sell the Speed Classic in the classified section and anticipate trying to sell the others.

Galco makes a Side Snap Scabbard for the J-frames which secures the gun at the root of the trigger guard. I like the BlackHawk Speed Classic, but find the Galco SSS snugs in closer to the body.

Aker leather makes one, if you want it with a thumb break model#137 J-2. Just bought one at the last gun show, Nice holster!

Andrews Custom holster, saddle style. Works well for my model 38 with shrouded hammer. One of my favorite holsters.
