I wrote S&W about purchasing a 9 round magazine that will function in a M639 9MM. Mr. Paul Remillard (S&W) E-mails me that "they" are baffled by my inquiry because the 639 magazine already holds 9 rounds. As an owner of 2 (now 1) 639s, I must be mistaken as I've only been able to load 8 rounds in any of my 8 Model 639 magazines since 1991. The guys in customer service sniffing White-Out, or what?

The 39-series mags that S&W makes and sells now hold 9 rounds, but the original 39 and 639 mags did not. They must have been thinking only of the currently manufactured mags and not the originals. The 9-round mags will stick out from the grip a little in a 39 or 639.

There was a redesign of the 9mm magazines that changed the floorplate, follower and how the magazine body retained the floorplate. May have changed the spring also. This added one round to the previous magazine capacity.

If you get the parts, and with the careful use of a dremel tool, you can retrofit the older magazines to take an additional round. I've got one 14 round 659 mag I converted to a 15 round magazine and use it in my 5906 without difficulty. You could probably add the extra round without changing the floorplate, I did so to get additional length to improve seating of the magazine during reloads.

The current magazines should fit your 639 without any problems.
