I have a new ejector rod that I ordered from S&W to replace my chewed up ejector rod. When I install the new ejector rod and close the cylinder, it darn near impossible to open the cylinder again. I can push in the button to swing the cylinder out, but the cylinder doesn't want to swing out. If I put the old ejector rod in, the cylinder swings out like normal. What am I missing? Could it need some fitting as in filing off some of the end of the rod? Here are pics of my new and used ejector rods:

Yes, the ejector rod needs to be fitted. First, make sure that the extractor rod is snugged down tight.

With the cylinder swung out, press the extractor center pin in flush with the hub of the extractor and hold it. Look at the end of the extractor rod, and check that the center pin is flush with the end of the rod. If it is NOT flush, that is the amount that needs to be filed off the end of the extractor rod.

This fitting needs to be done, otherwise, the forward locking bolt will snag on the end of the extractor rod, causing the difficult opening you described.

It's not an illusion. The threaded portion is also longer than on the original. Both reasons why a replacement extractor rod has to be fitted to match the length of the existing center pin.

Thank you for the help. I'll see if I can get this figured out and taken care of tonight.

Well, I finally figured out where to Dremel away the metal. Now it works and looks much nicer. Thank you for all the help!
