A local shop has a very clean 640-1, the one without the lock and 2" lug barrel, priced @ $475, that one of my sons is considering. The store will probably drop $50 or bucks on the price but then there's still taxes (guns/ammo have an additional 6.5% here now) and the background check fee. Decent price? J frames aren't in my wheelhouse so any advice appreciated.

For the love of God, man! Go and buy that right now. It will not stay in the case for that price unless your gunshop only has mall ninjas and overweight wannabes as customers.

That's awesome lol ^. They do get a few discerning customers and items but mostly it's plastic fantastic. Snubbies sit for awhile.

My son went today again to look at it. He has a number of nice items but no revolvers until I give him my late dad's 1981 686 no dash and my 1980 63. He's thinking if he can sell his Sig 365 he might grab it.

For that price, I'm wondering what's wrong with it. I would certainly check it for proper cylinder timing and lock up, excessive end shake, correct trigger function, and forcing cone erosion. If it checks out good, $475 is an outstanding deal.

All the used guns get a thorough inspection by the in-house gunsmiths-a good group-prior to being offered for sale. Any faults if found are addressed.
