I really like the new M&P340, but I don't need the .357 capability. I like that it is lighter than a 642, but that isn't a huge deal for me. What I like most about the 340 is the front sight. Can the front sight on a 642 be replaced? It looks like it is just part of the metal mold so I don't know if it can be done.

Of course, the cost of gunsmithing the 642 with a new sight might be very close to the $270 difference in price.

I believe Hamilton Bowen gets about $300 to $350 to put that front sight on a 640 and open up the back trough. I don't know if he does it on an AL frame, however.

You should check the classifieds. There was one for sale with this exact front sight. I know since this is also the set up I want.

In the store they are upwards of $750, which is ridiculous. I believe the one for sale here was $600.

This is sometimes the type of gun that sales like the original 44 Magnums. The gun has been shot 5 or 6 times, and a nearly full box of ammo is included.

Good luck.

Yup it is intergel with barrel. Somewhere I saw a company that would rework the front sight and install a white dot or trinium sight. But I seem to remember it costing close to $200, but I could be wrong. No, I didn't keep the info because I thought it was stupid idea for a "belly gun" or other words a gun designed for concealment and shooting 7 yards or less.

Yeah, $600 is way too much for a 642 no matter what front sight is on it.

Old Navy, I agree that the night sight probably isn't required, especially as I will eventually put CT grips on it. However, I do like that sight better and I also like that ejector shroud on the .357 class J-frames compared to the exposed ejector on the 642/442.

I meant a 340 was for sale for $600. That is border line great for a 340 with the XS sight we want.
