I have a new 642-1 (no ILS) that I took to the range for the first time the other day. Shot a box of 50 Remington UMC 125 Gr FNEB .38 spl standard load (LL38S17) with no problems. I then switched to the exact same round in +p (LL38S2) and had 1-2 FTFs for every 5 in the cylinder. I believe I had 13 FTFs out the box of 50. Of those, a little less than half fired successfully the second time through. Ammo wasa received new, but no lot no. to confirm date of manufacture.

Has anyone experiened or heard of this with either the 642 or the UMC +p ammo? I have read that it may be a firing pin issue with the 642.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

My understanding is that part of the reason these firing pins came to be were J frame FTF issues.

Strangely enough, a case of UMC 158 gr .38 ammo I shot a few years back was the worst I ever saw for misfires. To be fair, I have reduced power springs in my guns and the ammo did fire with a full power hammer spring in place. Good reminder why defense guns should never have reduced power springs....

With a new factory spring, the ammo should fire.
