I added my 642 (with lock) to my range time last evening. Interesting. All shooting last evening was at 7 yards. Several observations:
1. I switched out the rubber boot grips with factory walnut and the Tyler "T" adapter. Works very well for me. Recoil was in no way objectionable, though after shooting perhaps 35 or 40 rounds, my hand was fatigued from the "crush" grip.
2. Most of my shooting was done with a cast 150 gr. bullet pushed by 4 gr. of W231, which hit just about 2" high and and inch to the right of POA. I also put a cylinder of the new Speer 135 gr. "Short Barrel" stuff through the gun. Wow! Tight group printing almost exactly to point of aim. Good stuff!
3. I was impressed all over again at how well this little wheel gun works. The DAO action is stiff but predictable--not difficult to place shots on target from defensive ranges. (I've painted my front sight bright yellow to help with visual "pick up"). There's a reason why this platform continues to thrive in the age of wunderautos!
