LGS (actually a pawn shop) just got two pistols -- a 645 and 5906.

Both are in 90+% shape, but no box or papers and the owner is unfamiliar with 2nd and 3rd Gen Smiths and isn't sure how to price them.

I'm interested in the 645...and said I'd ask what folks here though the current going prices were.

I want to make a fair offer and he'll give me as good a deal as he can (I help him with with some stuff) but I would like a reality check beyond the big auction site (which I will check). (I've got a 745, 4566, 4513, and CS45, so I'm not desperate to buy...but it's a sweet gun, in great shape, and if I can get it at a good price...well, I'll be mighty tempted.)

While I'm not interested in the 5906 I said I'd check price on that as well.

As mentioned both guns are very, very clean, no scratches dings or discolorations; original grips on the '06 and Pachs on the 645.

I'm here in the Pacific Northwest, but would be interested in prices anywhere.

The 645 goes for a heck of a lot more today than I paid for mine a few years ago. I'd say condition, originality, and extras like magazines, correct box, and papers will play roles with either. I'd say a well used 645, one magazine (genuine S&W, not ProMag), and the commonly seen Pachmayr replacement rubber grips, these days would go for somewhere in the $650-$700.

Better condition and especially if it has the original S&W grips, $800. With Box and papers, add another $50-$75. NIB and you are in the $1000 area.

I would also add about $75 to a 645 that has the big, factory made, adjustable rear sight. Genuine S&W 645/4506 magazines have also become really expensive items. Gone are the days of picking them up for $30-$40, they are now fetching over $60 each, that's something to consider.

There are tons more 5906's out there than there are 645's, so 5906's fetch a lot less than the bigger S&W pistols. I'd easily lop off $150-$200 from 645 prices when considering a 5906.

5906 $500-600 in good condition without box (+tax and shipping if applicable) - but there are a lot out there - as pointed out check GB for sales history (Advanced Search, Completed Items)

645 guessing $700-850 range but not a lot of reference data (again + tax and shipping if applicable)

But if you are buying on GB add at least $100 to cost for tax and compliance fee and shipping for 5906 and at least $150 for 645 (right now GB Tax calculations seem to be at least 2% higher than actual Tax rate - have called it to their attention over a month ago with specific info but they dont seem to care.)

P.S. If you are in a mag restricted state and gun with 15rd mag can't be brought into state but can be legally transferred within state, add $ for 5906 with 15 rd mags.

Clean guns are good, but in the case of 2nd/3rd Gen pistols the key question these days is always: how many mags are there with each gun?

The question gets more important with certain types of pistols, such as the 10XX-series or maybe one of the oddball compact models.

I would like to add that if any S&W has the adjustable rear sight they are bringing more money.

Agree on mags
But at least there is a good option for the 5906. While I prefer SW OE 15 rd stainless, the MecGar 15 rd and 17rd blue are still available and unlike other aftermarket mags, they seem to function without problems. I think that and the number of 5906 mags out there has kept the 5906 mags in the $30-40 range.

The 10xx mags are an entirely different story - figure $100 ea +/-, but mostly +, especially + for the later ES1 and MS1 marked AccuGlide with white followers. The earlier ES marked with white (retrofitted?) or yellow follower mags slightly less desirable, but still $100 range.

The factory 5906 mags are still widely available here. 645 definitely not so much, I scour every gun dhow for second, third and fourth gen mags and parts. Pricing here would be as per MP5 above.

Sorry i got sidetracked on the 10xx mags. If i recall correctly the 645 takes same mags as 4506. Assuming this is correct there is a generic (ProMag?) but i would still stay with SW originals. Value $50 +

Yeah, I would not rely upon a ProMag magazine, but they are often good for practicing a failure drill. MecGar magazines are usually just as reliable as S&W magazines. MecGar may well have been the original supplier of S&W magazines.

MecGar mags are just as good as factory, but for some reason, they only really made mags for the 5900 series pistols. Never saw a MecGar for the 6900 or 3913 series of guns, and surely never saw any for the 4500 series. Never could figure it. 5900 series guns aren't being carried in any real numbers. Mine are strictly range toys, but plenty of people are still carrying the compact and sub-compact Smith's. They'd surely sell a bunch of the 4500, and even the 10MM magazines if they made them.

I own both a 645 and a 5906TSW. I really like the 645 and carry it in a shoulder holster wit 2 extra mags in when wearing a jacket.
Just got the 9mm but it is good carry size for me and I will get it to the range this week.
I do not mind the 2 1/2 pounds when carrying, in exchange for the firepower and shoot ability. But, I am not walking a beat or scrambling in and out of a car either.

If MecGar made mags for 4506 or 4516 or 3904 or 3913 or 4006 or 4013 or 1076, If they did, I would be happy to buy them, but as someone else pointed out they dont. Aftermarket mags for some of those pistols are available from other sources, but I would not rely on them.

The 645's fire control mechanism really sucks. However, it can be easily replaced with excellent 3rd Generation parts, which produces a pistol in my view superior to both the 645 and 4506:

That safety is a re-contoured 745 safety.
