Good Morning All! Always the student so here's another question.
Model 648's. When did they become round-butt?
I see all the "no-dash" are SB and all the -1's I have seen are RB.
I came across a -1 (box is 1994 if I'm correct) that is a SB and factory Combats.
Transition gun?

I do not want one! Casting bullets I can reload .32s and .38s for less $ than .22 Mag. cartridges cost. The mag is a rifle cartridge.

Now with my ever so important opinion out of the way, S&W did not raise dash numbers when they discontinued all square butts. It's been posted that, in general, dash numbers were raised when a manufacturing change was made that would require the repair department to use different parts. Different stocks didn't count. Non-full lug 4" and longer barrel 629-3s can be found with both round and square butts. 4" and longer barrel 66-4s and 617-1s can be found with both round and square butts. In 617s and 648s dash 1 indicated the the top strap was milled for the new rear sight with a rounded front end and the top strap was drilled and tapped for optics. Also the shape of the extractor changed. Since the change in butt shape was not part of the dash 1 changes I would not call square butt 617-1s and 648-1s transition revolvers.

This does not answer your question but the SCSW 3rd ed. writes the 648 acquired dash 1 in 1994.

And two weeks later I found one! :D
Now I need to get back to the USA to take possession of it and my new 610-1.
