I have a pre-lock, frost finished 3 inch barreled 686 6 shot. Serial number CBBXXXX. It is in the box. The box says 2 1/2 inch barrel "SPECIAL", but it is definitely 3 inch. The product code is 104237 and not listed in my book. Anyone know anything about this one??

Lonnie,
They made some 3" for US Customs, product # 104228, in 1988. Perhaps your gun was one that did not get the CS-1 marking. What dash # is your gun?
Best,
Gary

Don't know what to say about the label, someone else here has posted pics of a gun that has a 3 inch barrel but the label says 2 1/2 inch.
My M686-4 3" six shot differs in the finish, it's standard satin, yours is bead blasted, looks to be the only difference. That probably explains the different product code.
Neat gun Loni, wish it were mine...

I have a 686 3" like Smithnut's with serial number that starts with BRL. It also has the regular stainless finish, not the frosted.

NICE... That would sure look good in my meager collection.

The box label has Spec Ord 0300. Is this the manufacture date? If so, it would be the 300th day of 2000, or Thursday October 26, 2000.

The barrel sure is 3 inches, and the box definitely says 2.5 inches. The serial numbers seem to match, from the info you gave.

Well, the gun can't be wrong - it is what it is. I'd say the label on the box is wrong regarding barrel length. At any rate it is a nice revolver.

SCSW states that the CBB prefix started in 1996, but that there can be gaps in the manufactured date time line. What is the dash number on this beauty?

From a SKU list someone posted on this forum some time back, 104237 shows as a 2 1/2 inch 686.

Is it possible someone sent a 686 back, had the 3 inch Customs barrel installed and had the whole thing glass bead refinished?

I think S&W still shows 686 3 inch CS-1 barrels in parts. This is from the Model 686 Parts list on S&W's web site:

56 077520000 $126.17 CS BARREL 3" U.S. CUSTOMS -

If I were you, I would get a factory letter. Weirder things have happened, but I would speculate that the revolver is not presently in its original configuration.
