686-5 question

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas, I have read the treads on 686's and I know what my copy of the book says, I am looking at a 686-5 4 inch barrel with IL for sale and it has the Hogue rubber SB grips so I ask the guy what dash it was and if it wqs a RB, he said it was a dash 5 and it was a SB. My question is could a dash 6 have a SB?

I don’t think the IL came about until the -6, and I also think by the -5 they were all round butts. The -5 was still pre-lock, but did introduce the MIM parts and frame-mounted firing pin. The seller could certainly have put on some round-to-square conversion grips on it. Someone more knowledgeable will correct me if I’m wrong.

I picked up a -5 this year that had SB (square butt) listed on the box label, but it is a round butt.

Seller most likely has a -6 or later. I too thought all -5 and later had a round butt.

thank you guys for your info, by what i have read i was thinking maybe the guy has never removed the grips or he's mistaken the 6 to be a 5, I will ask him for more photos. You all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Round butt started showing up later on in the -4. Gun probably has round to square conversion grips.

I have a S&W 686-5 seven shooter with 4" barrel. Wonderful gun to have and shoot.
