686-6 2.5" 7 shot .357 value?

No idea on where these are and in desirability due to the lock.

I would think.....

686-6 2.5" 7 shot .357 value?

I would think that it could go for $700 minimum being a short barrel and a 7 shot if it's in VG condition. To some people, a 686 with a lock is a deal breaker, but if somebody just wants the gun and doesn't care about the lock it's valuable. I see that more than a few have been sold for upwards of $1000.

It's a current production gun. Find out what they sell for new in your area and price it 10% below that.

Depends on if you're selling internet or locally, only a local sale matters what they're selling for in your town. If you're selling by internet as so many do, then your local stores don't matter so much. Either way, 10% is not going to generally be enough discount. I know a mere 10% is not going to get me to take the chance on a used gun when $80 or so more can have me opening a brand new case.

It is more likely to need to discount any used gun that does not have some additional value such as being an emerging collector's item more than 10%. 18% to 20% generally. On an $800 new gun, most people will happily pay $800 new verses $720 used at 10% off to go from used to brand new. Getting down to $640 - $650 is generally going to be necessary to make someone say, "hey maybe used is the way to go here".

Recently on Gunbroker a guy in Oregon was selling a PC S&W 986 2.5".(9mm). Those are a recent S&W release that are still getting very close to if not full MSRP of $1,129. He wanted $900 used; very close to 20% and claimed it was unfired, but since he would not allow inspection I passed.

Here's my track on the model. Prices rise and fall a bit based on availability. S&W does not manufacture all models all the time.

Smith & Wesson 686 Plus 2-1/2 in barrel Revolver in .357 Mag. Blue Book of Gun Values (37th Edition) indicates between $350 in 95% condition and $615 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 133 recorded prices for this model gun from $350 to $1200 over a period of 12 Yrs 5 Mos ending November 20, 2016. The average price as of that date was $600. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $849. The last 11 prices I have for this model since 2/15/2016 range from $360 to $1200 averaging $794

The 686-6 Plus (7-shot) is an excellent revolver! I bought a 2.5", and a 4", last summer. I paid $800/ea. when I bought them. Not the best price, but I support local gun stores, and don't mind paying a little extra, to keep their doors open, and have local support, if ever needed.

I sold the 2.5" in S.E. Michigan in Nov-2016, 'like-new' for $650.

I loved that gun, but I also have a 640-3 for EDC, and felt they were a little redundant.
