I bought a used 686-6 from gunbroker. I have shot it so far less than 50 times and occasionally (twice so far) after I shoot the trigger doesn’t reset. The hammer is down and the trigger is stuck in the fired position (for lack of a better term). Just a little manipulation and the trigger goes ahead and resets and works fine. Does anyone know what may be causing this issue?

Is the gun pretty clean or can you see any "gunk" or grease up in it? Does the hammer move smoothly?

Previous owner may have changed the trigger rebound/return spring for a lighter weight one. Stock is about 18# but people often replace them with #16, #15, etc. to get a lighter trigger pull.

In my guns #15 has usually been the sweet spot, and a #14 is hit & miss, as in it works in my 686-5 six inch, but won't return the trigger in my 686-6 three inch. Each gun can be a little different in what they like.

I'd contact the seller and ask if they did a "trigger job" on the gun. A new spring is cheap and fairly easy to replace (if you know what your doing).

Thank you for responding to my question, and for the information. I contacted the seller about this issue and he was convinced that the internal lock is the problem even when I told him the lock works fine, he is convinced that’s the problem. He said he got it used but never had any trouble with it etc. etc.
As far as the gun, it was very clean when I got it. The hammer moves fairly smoothly until the last 1/4 or so of the cycle and then it takes a little more effort to get it fully cocked. Its not a crazy amount of effort but enough to be noticeable. The DA trigger pull is heavy and not the smoothest I have ever seen even when compared to my new 610. However the SA pull is fantastic. Since the fix sounds straightforward, I will check with my local gunsmith. I am hoping not to have to send it back to SW. thank you again for your help.

As an update, I took your advice and had the the trigger rebound/return spring replaced . I got a kit from Wilson Combat for $25 shipped. Since working on things isn’t something that usually works out well for me, I had my local gunsmith install the springs. He also replaced the hammer spring since the kit came with a new one. The difference in the trigger is amazing especially the DA pull which is much lighter and smoother. I just put 9 cylinders of ammo through it and it worked fine. Thanks again for your help.
