Can anyone recommend a holster for a 686 4 inch that resembles the one on the Walking Dead tv series? I'm looking for something that hangs a little low from the belt and pulls away from the body. Opposite of high and tight. Most of the western ones I have seen have belts that have ammo slots, which I am not a fan. Thanks on advance.

I do not watch the series, but I did a quick Google search for images. I see lots of people with police-type swivel holsters in which the barrel is too long for the holster. It all just looks silly.

If you want a swivel holster for your 686 4 inch, please get one properly fit for the barrel length. :)

Some companies that come to mine that still make swivel holsters are Tex Shoemaker and Ted Blocker. There are probably others. In addition, a simple Google search for revolver swivel holster images will point you to many used ones by different manufacturers for sale on auction sites and so forth.

Considering that the main character is LEO, you're relegated to looking for low ride LEO holsters, with/without a swivel. The rig in the show is either an open bottom for a 4" revolver, or a cut off to accommodate Rick's 6" Colt revolver. I've seen various low ride open/closed bottom LEO holsters for 4" K/L and N frames, but never one specifically designed for a 6". The 4"ers should be easy to locate with a bit of research.

Blocker lists various drop models shown with semi-auto pistols. It would be worth a call to see if one specific model could be fashioned for a 4" or 6" revolver. With the popularity of the show, it's a good bet that quite a few folks are looking for similar rigs.

I completely agree about the open bottom. I didn't know they were called swivel holsters. I should be able to search better now.

Plenty of them are found on ebay and gunbroker. The original "Jordan" or "Border Patrolman" holster comes to mind.

The swivel models were available in 4 or 6 inch models. Almost every major manufacturer made them. Border patrol-types were also available in 4 or 6. Not very comfortable in cars with bench seats, though. I'd check robbt's listing in our for sale forums... he has a few holsters there that might fit your requirements.

holster

we used to use those swivel holsters back in the 70s, worst most uncomfortable holster ever made.
and the time frame of the walking dead movie, i don't think any law enforcement agency used them.

These are the old Border Patrol type police holster that was so popular in the 60's and 70's.
Tex Shoemaker still makes several different versions for revolvers and Autos.

One uses the old over the rear sight strap and the other a more modern thumb break. These are available for most revolvers and barrel lengths:

They also sell the correct "Sam Brown" type duty belt in which the buckle is actually an adjustable double hook to fasten the belt.
Shoemaker is about the only place left who still make this type of holster, and I'd bet the "Walking Dead" company bought a Shoemaker holster.

Duty Holsters

In addition to "The Walking Dead" this type of holster also starred in Dirty Harry "Magnum Force".
