686 Plus Mountain Gun found

Always liked the aesthetics of a tapered barrel,
Despite the factory rubber grips after finding this 686-5 Plus Mountain Gun today it was love at first site.

Product code 104200 , 1998, 7 shot fluted cylinder, round butt L frame with Hogue grips.
4" tapered barrel with "Mountain Gun" laser etched on the barrels right side , ".357 Magnum" on the left .

.375" semi target hammer, 317" smooth combat trigger, black ramp FS, black Micrometer click rear site with white outline.
Drilled and tapped for scope mount, 35.5 oz.

Limited Edition stocking dealers special.
Anyone else out there have one of these?

Should make a nice companion for the 629-2 Mountain Revolver.

Wondering if this ejector looks original or has it been cut for moonclips ?
I have nothing to compare it to as the original 686 is very different .

I have the same gun and it will never be traded by me. I got mine direct by UPS from S&W in exchange for a 586 that had gone bad. I love that there is no lock, because they started installing the locks right after these were made. Mine is extremely accurate and will do 1 to 1.5 inches at 25 yards with 145 gr Winchester Silvertips. Your extractor appears ok to me.

This is the newest Smith handgun I own now and I must admit I was expecting alot less in the trigger dept.
Actually VERY pleased with the action of these 7 shot guns.
They are very snappy to point and the trigger lockup is quick and crisp,
Points more like a model 66 than a full underlug 686.

I have two Mountain guns one in 44 and the other is a 45 LC. I need or should I say want a 357 too. Yours is a very nice looking Smith.

Frame mounted firing pin , MIM hammer, trigger and cylinder release and as with all
Mountain guns it is a roundbutt without grooves in the frame grip ...But....tapered barrel, 7 shots and NO IL !

With a little imagination and a set of K Target grips and...Walaah!

Or round butt Magnas..

Wow, nice MG, Engine! I've shot a Model 25 MG with a 4" barrel...I'd like to get a 686 MG myself someday to compliment my 4" 686!

The original 686 Mountain Gun was a 7-shooter and a dash 5, pre lock, made in 1998, code 104200. There is a Lipsey's Special 686-6 Mountain Gun which is a 6-shooter and has the lock. I think the 686-8 is the 686 Stock Service Revolver.

I had one and sold it. Miss it but I wasn't using it

I've got one too. 686-5. Red post on patridge front sight. I put smooth presentation target grips(Herrett/Cdnn) on mine and live with the gap in the back. Has replaced my 19 for carry........Don't worry about cracking the forcing cone on this one.

Wow, I realy want one of those. I have a 686+, and two mountain guns, both in 45colt...A 686 MG would be nice to add to the collection.

I actually transposed the dash number with the 1998 production date.
It is in fact a dash 5.

The OP's gun my very well be my favorite L frame I have seen so far. I really like the 586's but that MG barrel just makes that 686. I think I'm in love.

What holster would fit the barrel profile? I have one of the latest 6 round versions and would like to get a holster made, but none of the makers I've checked have the "Mountain gun" listed. Would a 4 inch model 19 be close enough? I just don't want to go through the hassle and expense of shipping my gun.

Because the Mountain Guns have tapered barrels, they are narrower than the normal barrels and will fit any holster made for the caliber. I thought most of the Mountain Guns were N-frame guns, however the .357 may be a K-frame gun. Look at the frame number. If it is K then the model 19 type holster will work. If it is N then the model 29/629 type holster is needed. I have a .45 Colt and .44 Mag Mountain Gun and use a N-frame 4" Galco holster for both.
