I have to dump those Hogue rubber finger grips from my 686 Plus, round butt. I prefer the large wood target grips, but can only find them for square butt L frames. Does anyone know if the old style S&W target grips can be found for this round butt revolver? No finger grooves!

Yes, S&W did make round butt target grips for K/L frames (same grip size); checkered or smooth were options.

You can sometimes find them for sale in the classifieds here, or place a "want to buy" ad of your own; alternately, try eBay.

They tend to get a pretty penny as fewer were made compared to the square butt versions.

Ahrends grips makes a good version, too, if you like aftermarket.

You can often find them on eBay and Gunbroker. S&W made several for their K/L frame round butt revolvers without finger grooves.

Round butt target grips or banana grips are what you're looking for. You can find them with or without checkering. They were made in both walnut and Goncalo Alves. Ace Grips also made very nice ones sold through S&W in either walnut or rosewood laminates. Expect to pay $175 - $225 for any of them if you find nice ones though.

On rare ocassions you may run across factory S&W square butt targets made for round butt conversions. I've seen a few over the past few years, but not many and they usually go quick and expensive.

I prefer square butt targets on my K,L frames. Here's my 617 round butt with factory square butt targets. I did this on my 686+ also. Cut and stained a small piece of wood with small dowel protruding on one side About 1/8" so it's removable when the grips are off.

You can look for Ahrends round to square conversion targets on eBay (gripseller) or if you don't mind paying for super quality grips, you can get John Culina to make a set of round to square conversion targets for your L frame. John's grips aren't cheap, but they are worth every penny in my opinion. They are some of the most comfortable grips I've used on my N frame guns. I have 4 sets of his; 2 sets of square butt targets and 2 sets of round to square conversions on my round butt 44 Mag guns.

John posts here as Kurac and his wife posts here as Grip_Maker's_Wife. Their website is Home - Culina LLC

Altamont also has a selection of round butt grips including the conversion to square butt types. Laminated wood mostly but fairly inexpensive.

gripseller presently has a decent selection of Ahrends grips that fit the K/L frame guns on eBay right now. Their store name is D&J GUN REPAIR GRIPS and they have square butt, round butt and round to square conversion grips for sale right now with prices varying between $70-90, depending on finish and whether it is stained or not. That is cheaper than you will pay for factory target grips from the 80's, if you can find them in round butt configuration.
