Greetings,
I have a 686-6 plus model with a 3 inch barrel. Love the weapon! I can't even begin to guess how many rounds I have fired through this gun? Many many hot handloads! Was going thru it inspecting for wear and I need a new cylinder stop. Easy enough. End shake is tight. Yoke could be tighter to the frame. But heres the problem. The cylinder is sloppy loose on the crane. How can this be corrected? New crane? New cylinder? Is it something that can be bushed? I have never before encountered this problem?

Do you mean the cylinder "wobbles" on the yoke? As far as I know that needs a new yoke and/or cylinder but I confess I am not sure. I have NEVER seen that happen before and I have seen more than a couple of well-worn smiths.

Welcome to the Forum, I see this is your very first post.

There is a certain amount of slop that is built in and required. How much you have in excess isn't known by us because we can not examine the revolver. If there is too much slop that is no good either and would have to be corrected. We can not determine the issue (if any) here obviously because we do not have the revolver in hand to examine. I would start by calling S&W and explaining the issues you are having. I'd also measure just how much slop there is so they can determine if there is an issue. Your revolver should be covered under their lifetime warranty and if there truly is a problem they should fix it for free.

Just for giggles, find someone with a similar revolver and compare the slop to theirs - like I said, some amount is needed and built into it. This way you can sort of get an idea if there is really an issue or not. If you do have too much, then they should be responsible for fixing it. BTW, they just moved to TN and had their grand opening the other day, so I don't know if they are fully set up yet - you will have to find that out. I'd start with calling the Springfield MA customer service number first.

Hope this helps,
Regards,

Thanks guys for the input. I have a model 29 and a 629 and a X frame. None of these guns have this problem. I know they are different framed guns being a N frame and X frame. I went buy local dealer and checked a new 686 and it was tight well beyond my plus model. My guess a new yoke or crane and a cylinder will be in order? My next move will be calling S&W. One thing that is for sure the timing is a tad late due to worn stop. But I dont think replacing the stop will be all thats needed to restore the accuracy? To help maybe explain the looseness. You can close the cylinder and it will wiggle probably 3 to 5 thousands in any direction top to bottom side to side especially with the loose stop. When I ultrasonically cleaned the cylinder and yoke to remove the dirt and powder residue completely. That when it became obvious there was a problem. I am not saying I dont clean my weapon after each use but after having fliers from Factory and my light and heavy handloads. The issue gained my attention.
