I had a lady friend who is still a friend that my wife now gets along with. She was born in Berlin Germany in 1941 and is about 4 months younger than me. She claims her mind blotted out the war. It seems I recall more than her yet she was right in the thick of the bombing etc. She left at like at 16 or17 years old and eventualy immigrated here after world hopping etc.
Her dad was captured by the russians on the eastern front, and was in the Gulag and one of the very last to be released in the early 1950s. She said all these released POWs got off the train looking like death warmed over wearing rags. Her father got off, she said he was dressed in a suit like a executive, and healthy. It was evident the russians had won him over and her mom divorced him immediately. She said he was given a high political position in east Berlin. She did get to see him periodically but never did get along well with him he was pretty old to be a soldier. She has a brother that has retired as a coronal in the german army if thats what they call them.
We met again two weeks ago for my birthday in mesquite. I just could never get over how she claims her mind blotted out all that stuff.
As luck would have it I also had another lady friend live with me years ago when I went through my bad divorce as I needed a nanny just to be able to see my young daughter as I just about had to live on the job. "Martine" was a couple years older than me. She was born in Newcatle England. She lost her mother in the bombing and her dad was killed flying a spitfire. The system kind of raised her in boarding schools. She married, her husband was some kind of engineer for Englands space program or whatever they called it. For awhile they lived in Johannesburg South Africa and he worked at a tracking station there. He was hired as a engineer here on some program so they immigrated here, but divorced prior to us meeting. She got cancer and died at home with me.
We had a Rolls Royce Engine Rep that I knew where I worked. One day we got talking and he was telling me storys as a english pilot during the war. I told him her story of her mother and a brother getting killed during the battle of Brittan. How they had lived near the gate to the Victors plant at Newcastle. The rep lost it. He said he was part of that fight and how one German Bomber got through them and dropped that very bomb just short of the plant! It can be a very small world. I met her ex husband when she died. We spent a day together and I was able to tell him stuff about her and give him documents she had that dumbfounded him! He was a very sharp, intelligent good looking Britt.
