I may have the opportunity to buy a model 6906 soon that looks like the one pictured below with the square trigger guard and the older 2nd-gen style sights. It looks more like a model 669 honestly than other 6906s I've seen, would I be correct in thinking this was some kind of transitional model between the two? And if it is can it fit the later Novak fixed sights or the Novak-style Trijicon night sights such as these ones?

And will they interchange freely with other 3rd Generation slides? Would you be able to put on a slide from a newer 6906, a 3900-series or even a 5900-series gun?

Answering the other part of your questions is yes, you could get a different top end with Novak sights. But...there are different length slides. Not by much but different.

My 669/6906 was beat but cheap. Rear sight was flattened but at that time a replacement one was not available. (I’ve since found/installed one.) I bought a couple different slides/top ends but one was too short, the complete one with Novak’s was too long. Not by much, (and it worked fine,) but I bothered me that it was just a bit long in the back. It’s PERFECT on my 3906 and 5906 though so that’s pretty cool.

You probably can’t tell but the top slide in the picture was too short, (not by much,) and the one with Novak’s was too long, (again not by much.) So I have three different slide lengths.

Yes, the early style 6906 was a transitional pistol in the same way that practically all of the S&W pistols were/are transitional in that S&W makes improvements to their pistols (subtle and otherwise) during the course of production.

Novak style rear sights will not work on the early style slides unless you mill (or hand file, as our amazingly dexterous friend, squidsix is able) a small flat area behind the dovetail (the dovetails are the same).

Trijcon makes a night sight that will fit the early slide, but it looks much like the early sight and not like a Novak.

Nearly every other 9mm, TDA(DA/SA), 2nd or 3rd gen slide (with the exception of models 910, 909, 908, CS9) will probably fit and function on your frame, however there may be minor dimensional differences that can cause problems and there may also be a need to fit a new sear release lever.

I just picked up this 6906 with dead Trijicon Novak-ish night sights. It doesn't appear the slide was milled.

That most likely was milled from the factory. Also, if you have the bead blasting setup with the secret sauce blasting media, you could mill one then put the factory finish back on it.

Correct, front sight also. Seems to be the standard MO for all gun manufactures and sights manufactures.

Thank you! I am seriously thinking of putting an LPA sight on that 4516-2 I just picked up. It's between that one and the 4513TSW.
Just have to figure out which is less blasphemous. :D
