There is book I read several years ago about a German sniper on the eastern front and he talked a lot about the exploding ammo. According to him the victim received a very nasty wound. He even went to the trouble to find a Russian sniper rifle and ammo just so he could use it against Russians. He thought it was much better ammo to take out the enemy than the German ammo he had to use.

Don't know about this ammo, but I read a book by a former Waffen SS officer who said that his orderly loaded his MP-40 with exploding ammo.
I think his name was Peter Neumann if you want to find the book. Maybe, "The Black March".
When I read it in high school, I thought that "exploding" bullets was a mistranslation of JHP bullets.
