I don't think S&W ever made anything in 7.63mm(?) but just wondering if any you [real knowledgable ;-)] S&W Forum guys out there ever re-loaded for a Broomhandle?
Looked for re-loading info on the C96 site - and unless I'm looking in the wrong place there ain't that much...not compared with the vast amount of good stuff available here...
My 1910 model works well, i.e. cycles the action/reasoable accuracy etc, on Fiocchi but using loads from the Lee manual it won't cycle. I know Fiocchi has a reputation for being "hot" and Lee loads are "conservative*". My other autos work ok on Lee loads. So, any suggestions?
* increase in 0.1gr increments? change powders? normally use Accurate No 5.

In this caliber the Lee loads wont cycle the gun, in my experience. This is especially true if you have put fresh springs in the gun.

These guns take some stiff loads to work. Once you have the proper ammo for them they are very reliable.

Given your preference for #5, which BTW is an excellent choice, start working up your load in one tenth grain increments until you get reliable function.

Let me know what bullet you are using and I'll check my other data sources.

The data in the Lee manual came out of the Accurate manual. They say they tested the factory Fiocchi ammo at 27,000 CUP but their data doesn't quite reach that level.

I have a beat up C96, interesting gun. My barrel is in pretty bad shape and the factory ammo keyholed pretty bad at short range. I loaded it with .312 lead bullets and they were a whole lot more accurate. I don't shoot mine very much anymore due to a faulty safety.

TY - NKJ nut & Jellybean
NKJ you're correct - yes and yes - darned strong springs...
I'll get started with the +0.1 +0.1gr routine - just how high to go with Acc #5? Have also got some Acc #2 (after a long wait) How do you rate it?
WRT Broomhandle bullets - have "Silverlube" lead, Sierra SP, Sellier & Belliot FMJ*(Tok)and all 85gr and .308 dia.
* I want to standardise on the S & B as they have a (substantial) crimp groove, are most readily available and are cheapest here in the UK despite looking like they're gold plated - some sort gilding metal(?) jacket so should be kind to the old girl's 100 year old barrel?:-)

Appreciate your help

I have found that 7.63mm bullets are difficult to find in the 80 to 90 Grain range. I take .32 ACP JHP bullets and run them through a .308 sizing die with very good results.
My old Broomhandle is such a sweetheart that I seldom shoot it anymore. My CZ-52 gets the bulk of 7.62X25 ammo. My indoor range master hates that thing because of the supersonic crack of that little pill. hehehehehe

TY Fuego - hadn't thought of that i.e. re-sizing 32cal...
but now I can readily get the Sellier Tok bullets with the crimp canular(?) if I can just get the C96 cycling I'll be happy...and if I wear it out I'll buy another one a lot easier than I get another Fosbery or even a Triplelock or for that matter a S & W Model 52 let alone a CZ-52...

Keep up the good supersonic work :-)

I usually just size my .32, 78 gr. bullet to .309 for the Mauser. I have also used some of the Hornady XTP's in it.

Lyman #48 lists a max load of AA#5 using a Hornady 86grain FMJRN bullet at 7.1 grains.

TY Jellybean
The Lyman book is the one I don't have - wrong!
Must be getting old...just wasn't with my other manuals...
My Lee manual's max Acc #5 load is 6.3gr
looks like I'll be pulling all the stuff I made using the Lee loads:-(

Many Thanks
7.1gr Acc #5 works great with an 85gr FMj...
in fact as good as the factory Fiocchi...

and I had the Lyman #48 all the time...
YET ANOTHER senior moment...

reviving this thread

I recently came to be the lucky owner of a Wartime Commercial Mauser. Bad news is some GI nickel plated it. I field stripped it and everything looks like a go.

Anyone have a good source for ammo. I got some PRVI ammo from Graf and sons at a good price. I am not finding any S&B ammo and Fiocchi is a little on the pricey side.

As far as reloading I was wondering about the bullets. I have seen that .308 will work and I have seen that the .308 is better for the Tokarev and that I should use the .311- .312. Not sure I want to reload right now but, will have at least 3 boxes of brass to use should I chose to.

If you do some research, you will find quite a bit of information about using the 7.62x25mm Tokarev military ammunition in the Broomhandles. I'll leave it at that as there is debate on the practice. There are numerous forums on Broomhandles.

Right now it is a single shot. I am assuming that I need a new spring for it. Every time I fire it the bolt doesn't go forward. I am not sure that the nickel plating doesn't have something to do with it.
