9mm 124 HP hi-vel loads

While going through some 9mm pistol load data, I ran into a thread that had a race between the

Berry HBHP "Long" bullet vs a Delta std HP design.
The only difference was the Berry OAL was 1.162", the Delta was set at 1.095".

Do not use these loads until you work up to them, since they are 100% or more ?
The 1st charge is with the Berry bullet the 2nd charge is the Delta bullet.

CFE Berry 6.7grs ................ 1333fps
.......Delta 6.5grs.................. 1330

BE86 6.9 ............................ 1348
........ 6.4 ............................ 1300

Blue Dot 8.5 ........................ 1380
............ 8.4 ........................ 1360

W572 6.8 ............................ 1395
........ 6.4 ............................ 1327

I found it very interesting on the fps, amount of powder and the OAL, used in these loads, to get the fps data.

I also noticed that a plain Jane Winchester 124 FMJ was faster than all the HP loads and posted over 1405fps,

which was no surprise, since my 115 and 124gr Gold Dot HP test get slam dunked by a plated "Ball" FNJ bullet, every time in the fps department, in my top loads.

Just tossed this data out there for you to look at, since I just finished a test
on a bullet with a OAL of 1.09 and 1.12" to see if one setting, out did the other in target and SD loads.

since weight taken from the point, must be shifted to the base, there's simply less room in the case with an HP. So yeah ... there are no surprises here. The phenomena really seems to stand out in 9MM, but trading a bit of velocity for terminal performance seems acceptable.

I don't really see a problem with that data, if the correct OAL for the bullet and powder is used.

In my 5" barrel 9mm pistol with a
Berry 124 THP .356" dia. bullet with a OAL of 1.075" with a charge of
BE-86 at 6.1 grs of powder, I get 1233fps.......
67fps under the listed 6.4 grs of power, used with the Delta bullet.

Powder companies provide loading data for a reason. The un-sourced powder charges/velocities that you provided in your first post for BE-86 is well above the max provided by the powder company. Reloading safety involves a lot more than matching col and brand of powder, or just seeing how much powder you can put in a case.

Where'd the data come from and what guns were used? Getting 1400+ FPS from WWB seems odd unless shooting from a really long pistol barrel or rifle.

That Berrys 124gr HBHP bullet may not be their best choice for hot-rodding: I much prefer their 124gr HBFP-TP & HBRN-TP versions as they are both sold with a higher advertised velocity limit of 1500fps.

I often use the F(lat)P(oint)-T(hick)P(late) for 357 SIG practice/range reloading. That's just about how much (around 6.5-7gr CFE-Pistol) I'd use in that application as well: does seem pretty hot for the H(ollow)B(ase)H(ollow)P(oint) in 9mm to me, But, what do I know?

Imo you promoted them without doing any checking at all. Hodgen's online reloading data gives pressure tested data for Berry's hbrn using CFE and W572. They include the pressure, and the loads you posted are well over the max charges and velocities they pressure tested.

The BE86 and Blue Dot loads you posted are also well over manufactures data for 124 jacketed bullets.

The usual recommendations are to recommend published data from reliable sources. Not unsourced data from "a race between the Berry HBHP "Long" bullet vs a Delta std HP design"

In fact, the available data from the powder manufacturers was directly referred to, and easily available from the powder manufacturers web site.

It is the boards rules/decisions to be abided by, but to miss state what was posted is objectionable.
