9mm federal rimmed

The rimmed 9mm Federal was IMHO a good idea that never caught on. 9mm ballistics in a revolver with standard ejection. Unfortunately the ammo cost way more than surplus ball so no cheap practice. I think that doomed it. Nowadays even ball ammo is spendy and scarce, but everyone's into moonclips (even for rimmed cartridges) so the 9mm Federal is still doomed. That cartridge just can't catch a break.

I agree it's a neat idea. But I understand (from those who should be in the know) that what doomed it was the fact that someone at Federal said, "Hey, you know . . . these will fit in a .38 S&W chamber . . . !" :o

I wouldn't mind having some brass to try in my 940 but I wouldn't pay any extra for it. Moonclipped cartridges work well enough for me.

And while .44 Magnum ammo will chamber and fire just fine in elderly .45 Colt revolvers, .44 Magnum ammo hasn't been pulled off the shelves yet for safety reasons. Not that I want to give anybody any ideas...

Erich has part of the answer on what doomed the 9mm Rimmed. Another is the revolvers it was chambered for had the same length frame and cylinder as a 357. I think if they had been on a shorter frame and cylinder people would have seen the advantage. Also, they had advertised that standard 9x19 ammo could be fired in the revolver, just not extracted easily. The one I owned the chambers were too loose to do this. However I did shoot a LOT of 38 S&W through mine as practice ammo and used nickel Remington 38 S&W brass for reloading 9mm Federal.

I believe the reason it never caught on is that it has been an "Auto / Rimless" cartridge for too long. People either like the 9mm or something else - is what I have found.

Also they tried to make something that is truly not needed. Most people who like the 9mm also like the Auto Loader over the Revolver. Again, I said MOST. The ones who really went after this hybrid are in the minority and I guess there was just not enough interest or money to be made in it.

IMHO there are way too many variations of bullets and calibers. Most either work their way up on their merits or into the history books if they prove to be just another money making scheme. Too much overlapping, repetition, and duplication as far as I am concerned, but it's still a free Country ( isn't it?) so try if you can.

One reason to use the 9mm rimmed is they work perfectly in a speed strip for a 38/357. If you don't want to carry moonclips the speed strip works fine
