I am starting to reload my 9mm and picked up 1000 9mm Plated 115g RN bullets. My Lyman 49th reloading Manuel only has data for 115g FMJ HP. The manufacturer says to use mid-range FMJ load data or use cast load data. If anyone has any load data for this type of round it would be greatly appreciated if you could help me out 😊 i currently reload 45-70 government and 5.56/.223. Also, what is the best pistol powder to use? Thanks.

Ramshot's loading guide shows a lot of loads for Berry's and Ranier plated bullets.
Load Data « Ramshot

Edit: This shows all Western Powders, including Ramshot and Accurate.

Thanks for that info. I am just loading up a plinking round so I want to use the least expensive of everything. Any recommendations on a good clean burning powder?

For plated bullets in 9mm range ammo I suggest W231/HP-38 or Ramshot Zip powders.

I know it's comforting to have data for the exact bullet you're using but that's not always possible. You already have what you need, the bullet maker said use lead or middle jacketed bullet load data.

Hodgdon recommends a charge between 4.3gr and 4.8gr W231/HP-38 under a 115gr LRN bullet in the 9mm. That's what I would go with. Sorry I can't give you first hand info because usually load 124gr LRN bullets, not 115gr bullets.

Most plated bullets should be at below 1200 fps if possible but if you do not have a chrony....................

the starting to medium range of load data for your weight bullet with a JHP, JSP, etc. will work for all light target loads in most all of the loading manuals out there today. Just try to get the company that makes your brand of bullet and the company that makes the powder that you will be using.

One of the best "Small" manuals today, is the LYMAN manual that list a powder by most companies for its data. It will be in most sporting goods stores in your area and only cost about $7.

Get a manual and then find some powder ......... this is the hard part. Every company has its fast and medium burn rate powders. They all work..........just a matter of getting some.

Good luck.

Powders suitable for 9mm, there are plenty.

First, ones I know well and feature excellent metering properties. IMR SR7625, a great choice for reduced recoil range loads. Vihtavouri 3N37, will build excellent high velocity loads. Accurate #2, another great choice for a range load. Accurate #5, medium burn rate that produces a bit more velocity than #2.

Second groups, powders with poor metering qualities that I have experience with. Alliant Unique and Hodgdon Longshot. Both are somewhat slow burning and not exactly clean. Being slow burning they will also produce velocities higher than normally recommended for plated bullets when loaded to maximum so use starting to mid range loads with velocities under 1200 fps.

Powders I have no direct experience with but which are on my Alternates list. Bullseye, HP-38/Win231, Silhouette, Vihtavouri N330, N340, N350, HS-6, Power Pistol, and Tightgroup.

Thanks for all the info!! It is helping a lot! So based on what everyone has said I'm just going to use the load data from my Lyman 49th and pick a powder. It is for a HP 115g bullet so I should be fine correct? Even though I'm funning a platted 115g RN

Yes with the knowledge to keep the velocity down like the others have mentioned. Also, be careful of OAL. The manual will provide an overall length for the HP bullet - one which has a flat point. It will not be correct for the round nose bullet. In comparison - my OAL for Sierra 115 JHP is 1.050" but for RMR 115 RN is 1.091". Both with a light taper crimp. Good Luck!

By the way - RMR bullets have thicker plating and are recommended to be run at jacketed velocities. This does not apply to the Berry's bullets they currently show in stock.

Have loaded a couple thousand Berry's 115g plated bullets.
4.4 g 231
OAL 1.08"
The above has been successful with 1911, Glock, and Springfield XD/M
Been using the same load data more recently with polymer coated bullets. Equivalent performance.

Is there much difference in the load data between the different manuals?

I use 4.3 hp 38 oal 1.12 or 4.1 gr of titegroup same oal...

I really like TG in 9mm and 40....

Do y'all have experience with Green Dot in 9mm loads? It's the only thing I can get my hands on

I am using Green Dot in my 9mm loads right now with six other powders to see what makes a Springfield tick.

Green will match what w231 will do but is a little slower and will usually have a little less fps with the same amount of powder per loadings.
The good thing, even though you might end up using a little more powder, you will net a higher fps at the top of the loads, if you can find loading data.
The powders like Green and 231 or faster, need the shorter bullet OAL to achieve the maximum or factory velocity, so care is needed if going for a 9mm standard load for the 115 and 124gr FMJ or plated bullets......
since this will increase case pressures.
Maximum OAL on my plated RN bullets drops all my faster powders down to the Power Factor of 125 for the 115 and around a PF 131 for the 124gr.

Not a bad "Middle of the road" powder for the 9mm, in my book.

If you can find it I really like Tightgroup for the 9mm. In the 115 rn I load 4.0 and 4.1 and get really good groups. A little goes a long ways so be very careful not to double charge. It as well as all powders are a bit hard to find right now.

I got 5lbs of 231 so that's what I'm gonna be using for a while I'm just gonna start at the low end of my Lyman 49th that has a load for 231 with the 115g FMJ RN

Where did you find 231?, I've been looking for this for almost a year. Or, is this something you had sitting around since before the madness. ;)

No actually I was talking to a buddy and he stock piles guns ammo and reloading equipment and had a 5lb jug he said I could buy off him for $85 so I jumped on it lol

Dang, here I thought Winchester had actually started shipping some powder (somewhere). No such luck. The search goes on.
