Some one in the Air Force woke up and is sending in the Hawg to go after ISIS. The A-10 can take out captured Iraq tanks, destroy ISIS troops on the ground even after they try to disperse. and in general shred the will of these terrorists. The guys and gals who fly this amazing (but ugly) machine love their AC and love the mission. I know because my son is one of them. Nothing strikes fear into the enemy's soul as being rained upon by hundreds of HE 30 mm shells in a second.

Gotta find them first. We don't seem to be doing very good at that.

What makes the A-10 so great is it flies low and slow so the pilot can see the bad guys. Between the Hawg and the JTAC's (Joint Tactical Air Controllers) they will be found. The only hitch is current ROE. Too political.

They replaced the fast movers with A10's at our local squadron a few years back. You can tell by the sound when they are in the air. They are still trying to bring back the faster air wing. Not sure if keeping old aircraft running is feasible. The A10's are awesome.

Since the train out of the base here in Tucson we see them often and love it each time we do.

Most are planes with guns incorporated into the design. The A10 is a gun with a plane incorporated into the design. A friend of mine was a mechanic on the A10's in Desert Storm, said they are the most bad a-- weapon the armed forces had.

I never saw an A10's gun in action in person, but when I was in the Air Force I saw a film of an A10 do a strafing run on a captured soviet era tank. It was amazing to watch - pieces of tread and hatches and all kinds of tank debris was flying all over the place as the tank got shredded. The final seconds of anyone inside that tank would not have been pleasant. Nothing that moves is going home that night after 70 rounds/second of 6,000 grain armor piercing slugs at 3,250 fps rains down on it. For the ballistics nerd, that's 141,000 ft/lbs per bullet, 70 of them a second.

The A10 aint gone yet. There are a few Congresscrittera that have listened to those who have had A10s save their bacon. Maybe the Airforce will be forced to keep them around... but alas even Puff the Magic Dragon is getting redone. Rockets instead of the 105, 40mikemike and 20mm. 105 shells are cheap. Rockets aint. We dont need more smart muntions we need away to protect our troops with a forcefield of lead

No brag, jess fact....

I called this one the first time they tried to retire it . I thought, "You'll be soooooo-rreeeeeeeeee". It's been constantly upgraded to keep it useful. I just hope when it IS retired that they have something that truly tops it. This is the down side to all-purpose planes. They do a lot of jobs, but none extremely well. The A-10 being a single purpose plane does it's job EXTREMELY well. If one of those are headed your way flying between the trees, you'd better bunk way over and kiss your 'behind' goodbye.
