Several restaurants had specials for veterans yesterday for Veterans Day. Some had reduced prices or free appetizers, others offered veterans free meals. One of them was Olive Garden.
Missus P&R Fan served in the Army. She was the best looking tank mechanic Uncle Sam ever had, I'll bet.:D (I know that because when she got out she was a runway fashion model). Olive Garden is one of her favorite restaurants and they were offering veterans a free meal. We went there last night and had a nice dinner. When we got up to leave the manager came up and asked if we were veterans. I told her my Wife was one. She shook her hand, thanked her for her service and gave her a $10 gift card. We were stunned. A free meal AND a gift card. That was really nice.
I called the restaurant today and asked to speak to a manager, turns out it was the same lady. I thanked her and told her how much that meant to us.:)
It is really heartening to see this attitude towards our veterans. I grew up in the '70s and I remember how horribly Viet Nam vets were treated. Say what you will about our society today, but people are finally respecting those military members who keep us free. That makes me proud, and I want to thank all veterans on the S&W Forum. Your sacrifices are very much appreciated. God bless.
(Now go out to eat tonight at Olive Garden. Tell 'em Jim sent you).:D

I saw commercials where various and sundry restaurants were giving free meals to veterans.

Now, my father, if he was still here, would have had no problem proving he was a veteran. Flash that ID card and say, "US Navy, 1940 to 1960". My brother, however, who was a Marine from '72 to '76. How could he have proved it? I know (at least I assume) he has a copy of his DD214 somewhere, but I doubt he carries a copy around to show that he served.

You said the manager asked, and when you said your wife was - boom - comped it. Did the manager require any proof? Were they just taking people's word?

She managed to dig up her ID card, which had a really bad picture of her on it.:o I liked looking at it and gave her a hard time about it. She enlisted in may of 1979. I was just getting out of the 8th grade at the time.:D

I got a free lunch at Texas Roadhouse and a free dinner at Olive Garden. Both stated on their websites what proof was required...generally IDs for active duty, and DD 214s for Vets. I dug my DD 214 out of my safe and tried to show it to the waitress at both places...but they both just waved it away. I was shocked too when the OG manager handed me the $10 gift card.

The Golden Corral is giving a free dinner to Vets on Monday, from 5 to 9PM, and their website states that no ID is required.
