These poor women.

I imagine the fellers mean well but ...
These chaps seemingly don't take into consideration the mindsets, physical limitations, and/or recoil sensitivity of some of these women.

It's one thing if the ladies have been shooting a bit or even more than a bit.
Recoil and muzzle blast are, of course, not unfamiliar to these types.

HOWEVER...if a woman is 60-plus years old, somewhat frail and arthritic, never shot above a .22lr, and can't rack the slide on a .22 autopistol..., how does it make sense to forcefully recommend a tiny li'l .380 semi-auto 'coz it's easy to carry riding around in her pocket? That's scenario #1.

#2.) Even if you've got it that you're the local Jeff Cooper, MUST YOU roll your eyes and shake your head when the preliminary range safety rules are presented to yourself and your significant other prior to entering the range? Your babe's already scared half to death, being out of her element, y'know? She's only there, generally, to A.) shut you up, and B.) she's concerned enough about her own and her family's safety to even take such a big, violent leap out of her own normal world.

AND THEN...back in the aforementioned range where the poor Sheila's holding and firing a pistol (in usually too big a caliber) for the first time..."No no no, you're doing it all wrong!".................really?

Beach elvis say: "He who think of pistol as second male member risk diminished activity of first."

absolutely true, shooting should be fun and rewarding ,not punishing.
if you really want your sweetheart to get involved get her a 22 and introduce her to other ladies that shoot. then it becomes their thing instead of your thing.
22 is the first cal anybody should shoot
