My friend is in the market for a 629 Classic to carry as a sidearm while hunting. We both live in California, and the 629 Classic was recently dropped from the California Department of Justice Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.
This past week the Model 629-6 Classic “A” was added to the list: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/safeguns_resp.asp
“Smith & Wesson revolvers currently on the roster with the letter 'A' after the product code, will be engraved with the letter 'A' on the underside of the top strap of the revolver.”
He called the Customer Service line at S&W and was told that he was mistaken, that S&W did not stamp a letter “A” on any handguns, even though he was looking at a photo of it posted on the DOJ website. The representative then put him on hold and then came back and apologized, and confirmed that there are now “A” designated handguns. But no one in the Customer Service office knew what the “A” designation stands for. The “A” is stamped on the underside of the top strap and an “A” is added to the end of the SKU.
Does anyone have any idea of what this “A” designation represents and how is the SKU 163638A different from the SKU 163638?
Thank you!
Frank
