I was out and about this week checking on some of the areas that were recently flooded due to the heavy rains, and now we're in melting phase of the recent snow storm. Here are just a few pictures from my scouting around the area, and note that these are all snapshots of opportunity.


A whitetail doe crossing a slough and being escorted by a flock of red-winged blackbirds.

Those are very nice. What are the RWB's doing here? I'm north of you a bit and they are absent until spring.

I don't know if they are wintering around here or what, but it was a big flock of 'em. I make a few trips to the Arkansas Dept. of Corrections in south Arkansas during the winter and it's not uncommon to see large numbers of them in that area.
 
You can see the bright chestnut of a Northern Shoveler in the foreground of the first deer picture. Then you can see his profile in the second. Also I think coots, mallards and Ring-Necked Ducks.
