Let’s do weird things that that happened to you using Craigslist.
I have used a bunch,
I have had some fun experiences.
A while back, I decided to move up to the Nikon Full Frame FX type camera.
So I bought a D700.
Then I decided not to go that way, put the D700 up for sale on craigslist.
Clearly stated ‘will not ship.’
Get a response with a phone number.
I thought it was a local third party cell.
It was a dipstick in Ohio.
When I told him I ain’t shipping this camera unless I get paid first and extra for packin’, shipping.
He got mad!
Two hours later, a guy calls and says he’s in LA.
I see your not shipping?
You Cali boys are sharp as tacks! I’m impressed!
Then he says will you sell it to my Mother?
I hadn’t hear one before.
Probably!
Turns out his mother lives in Grants, NM.
She’s coming over here that afternoon.
They have a relative who owns a mail store near my house!
OMG!
Later, She calls me from a bank.
How do you want that money? Around $2,000.
I say. - you know what I say.
Cash me, please do not trash me!
She says you all that money in cash?
Yes Ma’am, Please.
Bottom line is, you want to deal with folks who have cash!

I have had the old send a phony check for more than the amount of the sale routine attempted on me a couple of times for Craigslist sales. I have always insisted on cash only. I also usually insist on a local face-to-face sale with no shipping. Some years back I got a response from someone in Hawaii. No idea why someone in Hawaii would be looking at a Texas Craigslist ad.

Seveal years ago I was selling some spare scaffolding. Alufase 21 ft Single Wide Tower Professional carpenter scaffolding tower [300181] - $3,799.00 : Premium Aluminum Scaffolding, Scaffolding for sale&

Listed in ad was "WILL NOT SHIP, LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY. CASH SALE ONLY. $4500.00" I got calls from FLA, SC and ONT. Yes, Ontario, CANADA. All wanted to know if I would pack and ship.

I had a local no-show buyer that got cold feet when I told him to meet me at my bank so I could deposit his CASH payment into my account before unloading the scaffolding out of my van that was parked in the bank parking lot.

I got several local calls that wanted to meet in either Wal-Mart or some other parking lot or have me deliver locally. Finally got a legit buyer that understood how the rules work. He met me at my bank, he brought cash, he inspected scaffolding, I deposited cash, we cross loaded scaffold from my van to his truck.

This was one of the easiest transactions I've ever had using CL. I quit using it because of all the scammers.

B2B cash in hand. Even with that in the listing people try the check with extra $$ for my trouble and they have some dude pick up the merchandise. Evidently these scams find their prey because they keep doing it. Even credit cards are no guarantee against scammers.
Cry a river but float your boat on out of here on your tears not mine.

I've used both craigslist and armslist sucessfully. Scammers are easy to spot and ignore. I insist on cash and face to face sales in a police parking lot only. If it's cash I use a marker pen to check for counterfeits. If that offends the buyer, so be it.

Locally, the police encourage use of their substation parking lots as locations for consummating such transactions. I've had potential buyers refuse to go there or not show up. That's a good thing. I've probably experienced attempts to use about every type of scam in the book.

Ahh...Craigslist..the place where crazy is all part of the fun.

I sold a Chevy pickup bed for $500 to a guy on Craigslist. He lived in Bosstown and had a local friend drop off payment. The friend gave me the cash and left. 3 months go by..no calls..nothing. A year goes by. I relist the bed and sold it again for $500.It's been 3 years and no word from the first buyer.

I had a hot tub listed that was barely used for 1/2 price. Got lots of calls and scheduled a few buyers to see it one Saturday. The first buyer shows up with a Pathfinder..with 5 people in it. No idea how they were going to get it home..and oh by the way..it's for my wife who has MS..he mentioned that at least 6 times. I would not budge on the price and told them so. He once again told me his wife had MS.
Meanwhile the next potential buyer shows up. He is driving an open back pickup and askes where the tub is. I tell him around the back of the house. He backs right up to the hot tub and pulls out the cash. I help him load it into his truck. The first "buyer" comes over and asks what is going on..duh... I just sold the Hot tub. He cries foul..I was here first. I tell him he had every opportunity to buy it first..but refused. He then tells me his wife has MS. I told him to speak to the new owner of the hot tub...

It's always an adventure...
